How to have endless supply of chives

Who doesn't love fresh chives with any kind of potato? Well all you have to do is plant them and give them enough soil. Like most herbs loose and well drained is best, even a largish pot will do. And get this - they come back bigger and bigger each year! I can just about watch mine grow as it seems they grow an inch a day now that the temps warmed up.

One plant is a foot high and as big around as a coffee can. Same with tarragon. This is their 3rd year. I guess they love the cool spring temps and sun. Really it's very easy to have an herb garden in containers, just make the pots really big and aerate the soil every year so it doesn't get compacted.

So 3 bucks for a little bundle at the grocery or just grab a handful and snip off your deck?
 
I just planted some herb seeds in a little window sill box a few days ago. Still waiting to see a sprout.
 
I'm thinking about growing some herbs (not the dank) and maybe a tomato plant too this year. My roommate already does some so whatever he's not already planting.

edit: For shits and giggles I'll grow a single stalk of corn. It will be the most delicious, well cultivated piece of corn.

That's an excellent idea. A little pot outside my door with a single stalk of corn.

Not going to happen, won't pollinate. You'll have a nice giant leafy stalk, and no corn. Nice thing about herbs, is you want to STOP them from flowering.

At 3 bucks a pop, vs. just walking outside and grabbing them. A few bucks for the plant (or start from seed if you like), throw it into the ground or big pot and you'll have more than you know what to do with year after year. You can't kill them.

An old neighbor of mine got me hooked on garlic chives too. An interesting twist...great for baked tators. I had some of them growing in my garden.

Chives are about 80 cents here. I had no idea they grew so fast though.
 
Some pics. Keep in mind it's been cold here in zone 6, but spring is in the air. I prefer containers for herbs as I can just step outside and grab whatever we want.

Bonus points for who can identify what's in the foreground in first pic. Think really good hollandaise.

I have chives taking over a corner of my garden. Oregano and mint also grow like crazy too. They never seem to need tending.
 
That herb honestly looks like a fine verde basil, it's kinda hard to tell as it's somewhat blurry...other guess would maybe be Chervil but the leaf structure is wrong. Could also be a cultivar of thyme.

Oh and I have rosemary, sage, oregano, genovese basil, thyme, lavender, chamomile and chives as my herbs...
