Don't worry too much about making a fool of yourself. Likely the only person that will care about how you do is yourself. The best quick advice I'd give to a complete beginner is just to shift your weight. You want all your weight on your left foot when you're done swinging. On the back swing, keep the weight on your inner right foot, then on the downswing shift all that weight to the left side of your body. And also keep your eye on the ball until you've completed your swing. I've been golfing all my life and I'm still bad, so don't worry about it too much. Also, swing easy and don't worry about killing the ball.
