How to go from video tape to DVD?

I've got a sony handcam and would like to xfer the movies to DVD. I got some software packaged w/ the gear I just bought, but the quality is suck a$$. The programs I've got are ArcSoft Showbiz for capture and or movie generation and Sonic MyDVD for movie generation. I'm new to all this and don't really have a clue about any of the file names, formats etc etc. I'm just following the directions in the software. But the quality of the DVD is horrible.
The handycam is connected to my PC via USB2, is that an issue? I've also dug into the settings etc of the software to see if I could tweak and did what I could. Like upping the fame rate. The fastest setting I could get was 30fps. I have no idea if that is good or not.
Can ya'll please post any comments, suggestions, how to's and links to software I could try or how the hell I do this? Sorry for the noob aproach but I have done searches on here and nothing has helped me so far. Thanks,
j

doing it and doing it right are 2 different things...
the link tk149 (why aren't you at your post?) provided is pretty good start, but as he said... overload for sure.

If you have files from your camera already on your HD and simply want to make some NTSC COMPLIANT DVDs, I would suggest TMPgenc DVD Author. Easy and pretty "powerful" when it comes to home users... other than that, if you want to figure it all out you have A LOT of reading to do.
