I currently have to stand for 8 hours a day. I want to know how I can condition my legs and feet to withstand such abuse. Please post your strategies. Thanks.

Stand up for long periods of time.

I know it's not what you want to hear, but that's the only thing that's going to condition you for it.

Also, try not to stand on hard flooring, and buy some supportive shoes with good cushioning.

depending on the job (if you are walking around its not as much of an issue)

if you are say.. a mechanic, working in a fixed spot, standing, its a good idea to get some kind of padded flooring, your back will love you for it

with my job, there are days when certain experiments require me to stand for long periods of time (6+ hours). it's a "clean" room, so i'm not allowed to bring any mats for the flooring, and the floor is coated hard concrete (easy to disinfect). what i usually do is, every six months or so, go to Foot Locker and get the most comfortable shoes i can find (like Nike Shox) and then put in one of those gel insoles. i find them highly effective.

What job and what company? A good pair of shoes and Dr. Scholls are your friend. Don't skimp on the socks, either.

Obviously, shoes with good support and cushion is the first step (no pun intended). Wear nice thick socks with a high cotton content.

Find something you could possibly use to rest one foot on while putting your weight on the other, such as the lower shelf of a counter or the lower crossbar of a folding chair, anything that is a few inches off the ground. A lot of places have these little 'step platforms' that are about 5 or 6 inches tall for employees to rest one foot on. Alternate every so often.

Exercise your foot and leg to keep the blood flowing. You can do this in a number of different ways, by picking up your foot an inch or two off the floor, flexing and extending your foot, stretch your legs out, rotate your foot around. Any inventive way to work the muscles in your lower legs and foot. Flexing the muscles periodically helps 'squeeze' the blood vessels preventing venous blood from pooling in your legs. Increased venous pressure and reduced blood flow are the most common cause of that 'ache' in your legs and feet.

If you are not confined to a small area, just walking a little back and forth can help.

When you get home, lay flat on your back and put your feet up almost vertically on something like a wall for 10 or 15 minutes.

And last but not least, SUPPORT HOSIERY! Yeah, they make this support wrap and hosiery for your legs. If you plan to make a career out of standing for hours on end, this stuff is a wise investment, appearance be damned.

Sounds like you're in med school in the OR....stand around and do NOTHING and have the surgeon yell at you.....

But I agree with tcsenter, support hose work really well, seriously.

Also, a lot of medical students, residents, nurses, etc. buy Dansko's, which are supposed to be really good. I have a pair that I don't really like, but everyone else that I have talked to swears by them (that's why I bought them in the first place). Unfortunately, they cost around $100, definitely not a Hot Deal.

for 3 years I stood and walked for 8-10 hours a day. After the first week, you get over it. I wore steel toe and plated boots, so they were not the most comfy. I did use Red-Wing inserts with helped quite a bit.

Are you standing in one spot? Get a fatigue mat. I had one when I was cashiering (had to stand up for hours) and it made a world of difference.

Serious? Where can I get one from?

the employer ideally should provide one for you.

We have some kind of mat but I don't know if this is the fatigue mat you speak of. it isn't the greatest mat in the world and my legs or rather feet do get sore.

what do you do?

Are you one of the people that holds a sign on a street corner all day?
Wouldn't think they'd pay so much to do that, but hey, good money if they do...

Do a Google serach for "support hose for men." You'll be surprised at all the results. Do the same for "fatigue mat."

Lots and lots of results.
