can't do it for some reason.

the page on MS site at the bottom has:

Your PC has Windows 8 but the info on this page is about Windows 8.1. Update now to Windows 8.1 for free

i click this, it takes me to a green metro screen (the store i'm guessing) then nada. back to start screen and the end.

done a sfc etc and alls ok.

all win updates are up to date so wth?

even tried wsreset.exe but that gives an RPC error

The remote procedure call failed.

absolutely nothing wrong with the system bar this. although i've never used the store or any metro apps.

every reboot i get asked to update but then this store freaks out. there's no ISO i'm aware of to do this (at least from a reputable source) to make a bootable flash drive so not sure what to do to this point

as in the standard key i used to upgrade to 8 from win7? i recall something ages ago about people having to use some demo key to install to then be able to upgrade that copy and then use their normal keys

my install keys are safe and sound 🙂

I'm pretty sure my Windows 8 Pro key was an upgrade key as I bought it when they were going for around $40. I used that key to install Windows 8 on an SSD that I used for about 1 1/2 years. That SSD recently died on me about a month or so ago with Windows 8 installed. When I got the new SSD I installed a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 from the link I posted and the Windows 8 Pro upgrade key worked just fine. I have no idea if that key would work normally if it had never been used to upgrade this system.

I had a similar problem if you have windows 8 with media center the media center key takes over. You cannot reinstall with just the media center key.
A real good guy at the MS Store helped me out with search terms to look in my email to find the original windows 8 pro key. I can't remember what they were but I have that email archived I can look for key words later today if you need them.

i dont think there was a media key for 8 was there? just 7?

i'm not even 100% i got them via email or just copied them off their site. easy way to find out - to gmail!
