i have a pc with win98se and win2kpro.
when i hit F8 i get a menu to select various options including "safe mode".when i select safe mode i get another menu that asks which operating system i want to boot to.
[also says "safe mode" in blue writing at the bottom of the page] when i select windows98,it just boots to regular windows and not safe mode.Is there a trick to get windows 98 to boot up in safe mode?
Also:if you have ever booted into safe mode on a 98 machine,i am sure you have found "ghost" devices[devices that were uninstalled in the past and dont show up in device manager untill you boot up in safe mode]I am trying to install a UDMA[maxtor/promise card] 100 pci controller.
windows 2000 had no problem with the install, works fine.
But windows 98se wont assign a drive letter to the hard drive.[yes it is properly formatted]I think the problem is "ghost" devices that need to be removed from the hardware[device manager] section and i need to get to safe mode to do that. Thanks for any help.

When Win98 is booting, I think you must press F5 or F8 (or maybe F10, I seem to forget now) to get into Safe Mode. The Safe Mode *you* are seeing applies to Win2K only.

After you select Win98, try F8.

Select the boot to Win98, then hit Enter. As soon as Win98 starts to load, hit F8 (ie hit F8 immediately after hitting Enter to start the Win98 boot sequence).

...or highlight the Win98 entry in the boot menu and hold down shift while you hit enter.
