How to get that first experience?

Since every single entry-level job in IT requires experience, what is the best way to get the first couple years? Internships? Apprenticeships?








My friend put down on his resume that he had experience in home administration. It was basically setting up and configuring his home network of 3 or 4 computers. I have similar experience, but would that work most of the time in interview?
What would you call experience in building networks and troubleshooting family and friend's computers?

It really depends on what sort of job you are going for. "IT" is vague at best. Do you mean entry level admin b!tch work/help desk? If so, do you run multiple OSs and have multiple types of hardware and run any services from home? (could be a web or game server) ? If yes to that, then I'd put it.

But if you have three or four computers and just know how to make a share and send pr0n between them I'd say no 😉

Programming is much easier then admin type jobs because you can do it without working for someone. Every good programmer has programmed before they had a job or went to school for CS, or they at least program on their own for hobby. Doing that they accumulate a portfolio over time. Unfortunately you can't really do that for all jobs 😛

Work-study if you're in school. That's how I got started. Then I bullshitted the job really well on a resume, and picked the rest up as I went along.

I got started by donating my time to a non profit organization. They liked my work so much after a week that they insisted I bill them for my time. Go figger. 😛

free internships. That's why it's important when you're still in school. I had 4 or 5 in almost 3 years and it definitely helped.

ill be a jr next year. i wanted to get a entry level help desk position during the summer. ill look into volunteer work.

If your in college,

work for college computer labs, helpdesk, resnet
i did that

also interning somewhere, via looking or connections helps.

I am a graduating EE, but got a job as a network consultant in NYC 🙂, and my expierances were just the 2 above
