How to get SMART status on USB Drive

Hello All
I'm trying to find out how to get SMART drive status on an external PATA drive in a case. It seems like all the programs use IDE (or scsi) only for drive status. I'm starting to get an odd clicking sound...

So how can you get health of an external drive?

Is USB3 going to have SMART?

USB-IDE bridges pass all kinds of IDE commands, including SMART inquiries.

If all else fails, you can still remove the drive from its case and plug it into a 'proper' IDE interface.
