How to get SCSI cdrom to boot

Exactly. The SCSI controller's BIOS needs to support that. It's either on the card or embedded into your mainboard's system BIOS (in case of onboard SCSI). Then, as with IDE, some old SCSI CDROM drives don't support bootable CD format to start with. Anything below 16x is luck of draw in that regard.
 
Thanks for the info, the scsi cdroms I have are newer versions, plextor 40x and a toshiba 40x I think.

The two cards I have available to me are the adaptec 2940uw, and an adaptec 19160 ultra 160.

Does the motherboard have to have an option to boot to scsi cdrom, or just for scsi?
 
Your SCsi card should have a option to boot from the CD-ROM. Also your Motherboard should have a option to boot from a SCSI Devices first. Hope this helps. 😉

I hit crtl A to enter bios and changed it to boot from cdrom. When it starts up now I get this msg

"SCSI id:lun number #:# 0:0 - Toshiba cdrom xm6401ta
A bootable cdrom is detected in your cdrom drive
The boot section on your bootable cdrom are:
0. Default entry
No scsi boot device found
bios not installed"

This is with a Toshiba 40x cdrom set to id 0 and an adaptec 2940uw, I have boot from scsi first enabled in my motherboard bios.

Is there something else I have to set in my adapter bios to get this to boot?

Hey I always get that message. Press your number 0 and the cd should boot. I don't know if this is normal for ide cdroms but that is what I always get on my scsi.

 
Well one other thing I can think of on my scsi card there is an option in the bios to load the bios. I normally leave mine off since I don't have a scsi hard drive. But I have to turn it on to be able to boot the cdrom. My adapter isn't an adaptec so yours may not have this option.

I put in and older diamond fireport entered the bios to enable the cdrom to be bootable, and it worked straight away. Only problem is that when I got into XP it wouldn't load a driver for it, so it doesn't work once I hit XP.

I just did this last night using a 7 yr. old SCSI (2x) drive and an Epox 8RDA+ mobo.

Question: does your machine have a floppy drive? Is it enabled as a bootable device?

Thanks for the info Peter the LSI 53C875 was in Win XP, still can't figure out that 2940uw though.

I have a 19160, but haven't tried that one yet. I also have a K7T Master-S that has an adaptec u160 on it, and it works without a hitch.
 
Rule for the future: Buy LSI. Their stuff is soooo much more trouble free, mostly in regards to BIOS and driver issues.
 
I have the following old school card: Adaptec AHA2490U2W. Here are couple things to look for:

Make sure cables are terminated and check the ID #s on your CD-ROM.
Enable SCSI CD-ROM to boot
Check your CD<----making sure it IS a bootable CD.
Check your mobo to make sure you're booting the SCSI devices first then the rest of your crap.
Re-scan your SCSI #IDs

In most SCSI BIOS, ID #0 and #1 are reserved for bootable hard drives. Try ID #2 or higher for your Toshiba.

You must have a bootable CD disk in the drive for it to boot.

That's a rule long gone. Not even Adaptec's SCSI BIOSes care anymore. I've recently been booting a CDROM from a really stoneage onboard Adaptec 2940UW (on an Asus P55T2P4S). Worked like a charm.
