how to get rid of wasps?

  • Thread starter Thread starter
  • Start date Start date

for starters, i'm uber allergic to stings
and because of that, i'm a big wuss and scream like a girl when bees and wasps come around me

the deal: wasps are lingering around my back deck...specifically around the 2nd story bedroom window.
I don't see a nest, but they're always going to the same place.
I want to get rid of them without calling a professional...and without getting my ass stung.

please help 🙂

Small nuclear weapon will do the trick...also check your homeowner's insurance. 🙂

I wonder if one of those bug zappers would get them?

If you can't find the nest, I think it's best to call the professionals. If you CAN see the nest and you're able to get within 20ft of it without worry, then get one of those wasp spray things. Spray and run like hell.

i've got the same problem except i know where the nest is. They started in my mom's compost box and now they've also spread to the adjacent conifer. So i'm wondering the same thing.. how do i get these little bastards out of my back yard without bringing in an exterminator?

I'm having a wasp/yellow jacket/hornet thing right now. I had yellow jackets and killed them and their nest. Now I have another nest (not sure what these are) and it's under the mulch. Each day I dig a little deeper and then spray. There's plenty of stuff out there that will kill in a matter of seconds.

Remove ANY food. Scented candles or perfumes/colognes/scented anti-perspirant odors from the deck.

They have exceptional smell and will be attracted by any of this.

Don't hit them or you'll EASILY piss them off into stinging you a couple of times.

I work on a golf course and take care of all the wasp nests. I've only been stung twice all summer and that was just from random walking around and not seeing them; I've not been stung while actually taking a nest out.

You can't see the nest, so that means there probably isn't one right there. You've got something out there they like... some spilled juice or pop or something maybe?

If you can see the nest you need to determine if it's in the ground or in a tree. If it's in a tree it's super simple. I put on full rain gear, heavy gloves, and a mask. I make sure that the wasps have absolutely no way to get in and sting me. Then I take 2 doubled up garbage bags put them around the nest, clip it off the branch, tie it off, then walk away. Shake it up some to listen to them buzz like mad 🙂

If it's in the ground it's a little tougher. Again, I gear up, then dig the biznatches up with a shovel, smash the nest, then put it in a garbage bag. Fill the hole in, walk away.

The spray is good stuff, but you have to get them early in the morning or late at night (like 11 pm to 5 am times). Spray the hole in the nest or ground. Make sure to get it good, then leave for a few hours. Most times it kills a lot of them but it doesn't get them all. What's more, is if you just leave it like that, more often than not they survivors will rebuild the nest again. The only good way to take them out is the garbage bag routine.

If you have a pole pruner, I've discovered from experience that wasps are dumb. You can be whacking at the branch or nest itself with a pole pruner or stick and the wasps will only attack the pole up to 4-5 feet away from the nest. They'll ignore you completely if you're 8-10 feet away. Weird I know, but I've been able to cut a lot of nests down wearing just shorts and a t-shirt with a pole pruner that way. Of course when it came down towards me I ran like a bat out of hell 🙂

Raid Wasp and Hornet spray works great for me... IF the nest is reachable. Unfortunately, here at my house many nests are too high to spray. I've gotten to the point were I typically just leave them alone. I just view them as overlarge mosquitoes and go about my business, and I haven't gotten stung in the 5 years I've been here.

there's a nest somewhere. Are they wasps or yellowjackets? yellowjackets are the small black/yellow looking guys (they're underground)

paper wasps are long and slender, usually dark red or brown.

If they are just lingering but no nests, spray around the area just to discourage them. I think they hang out like that when they are sizing up a spot to start a new nest. There are some that really like to hang around the window here too, sometimes you can just open the window and spay through the screen. (Don't use the long distance stream one for that, more like a cloud/wide area type of insecticide).

If you do see some nests, wait until it's cool (colder = better) outside like in early morning or late evening/night and saturate them with a long range wasp & hornet spray.

wood wasps are black with a blue tint - NASTY, NASTY fellows

umbrella wasps are long and slender and brownish black and eat mosquitos.

Have gay people move into your neighborhood. WASPS hate that.

Haha, when I read Wasps in the title W.A.S.P's definition was actually the first thing to come to mind.

Heh, at least SOMEONE got it. 😀

if you can find their nest, the best way not to get stung is to spray them at night.. when they're all home and sleeping. if you spray it in the day when they're all out terrorizing the neighborhood, you're not gonna kill all that many of 'em, and the ones that are home (and awake) are gonna get pissy.

and.. if you're allergic.. see if ya can get someone else to spray 'em for you. that's what I do.. course.. this may be one of those situations where it's handy to be a girl. 😛
