I've sampled an old audio cassette and now have a .wav file that is a very good replication of the audio tape. Unfortunately, the source has a lot of hiss. What are the best audio editing programs out there for getting rid of tape hiss? What are the cheapest? And finally, because I am a beginner and will be using this for only 200 or so minutes of music, what is the easiest to use? With any luck, there will be some overlap. Also, if you know of any sites that specialize in this sort of thing, pointers would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Sound Forge seems to be fairly robust, although absurdly expensive. Cool Edit has two version (2000 and Pro). It appears that the cheaper 2000 version might do what I need it to do. Any users out there who can verify that 2000 has some sort of tool to try to reduce tape hiss? Thanks.

You can use the Noise Reduction tool in Cool Edit 2000 to remove tape hiss or other fairly steady-state background noise. It works very well, I've used it on hundreds of LPs and tapes that I've transcribed into my computer and burned on CD.

edit: and you can try it for free to see if it does what you need it to do.
