how to get rid of some computer annoyance

hello all, i need the help of the computer experts out there.
I have two driver problems.
1) installing audigy latest driver for some reason turns on cmss. without creative playcenter its seems to be imposible to turn it off.
well, for me playcenter is crappy and i dont want to install it, and cmss is also crappy, i dont want to turn it on. it reduces my bass and treble clarity, especially when listening to cds.
is there any registry hack to turn it on/off without installing the crappy playcenter?
2) i hav an nforce 2 chip based mobo. when i update the ethernet driver, the ethernet now will be called NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller #2
how to update the driver without the "#2" appear?
3) If a person use opteron 64 single core, and then upgrade it to the dual core version, can he/she just replace the chip without reinstalling windows?

thanks for your opinion. Any opinions count.

😉

1. im not sure i never had a problem w/ playcenter, but i didnt install the media package
2. right click, rename
3. correct you dont need to format if you just change the processors

1) Problem solved. found a file that creative hide called "ctpanel.exe". The file controls many important things, including cmss.
2) cannot rename. it's a device name not the Local Area Connection's name
3) Are u sure?

You will need to change the computer type the multiprocessor machine. You can do the same thing if you have a non HT intel cpu and then change to a HT. It does seem to have some quirks tho.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to read your entire post, just the title. Here's a suggestion, tell her to get off your back for spending more time on the computer than you do with her and make you a sammich! That's what I did. 😛

#2 try searching the registry for that name and rename it there. Just backup the registry before you change all you find.
