How to get rid of " requesting virus scan" in Word 2000?

I just loaded up Microsoft Office 2000 and when I went into Word 2000 it took a long time to open up old .doc files because in the lower tool bar it said "requesting virus scan". Is there any way this can be turned off? I have changed the security level from high to low but the "requesting virus scan" continues when I open an older file.
