How to get rid of fleas?

So my dog picked up some fleas despite the advantage plus I used. I applied another dose to her since it had almost been a month since the last dose. Do I need to do more? Do I need to treat my home as well or just count on the poison on her to kill them all?

Brand or product recommendations? I have no experience with this stuff. I was thinking of running over to PetSmart in the morning and picking something up to do it.
 
any fogger should do as long as it's for fleas. same for the dip, although I'm sure some could be recommended by your vet or the pet shop. be careful you don't blow up your house with the fogger

I used advantage to get rid of the fleas on my cats. They ended up getting in the carpet and attacking us. I used my Eureka Whirlwind HEPA vacuum and vacuumed really good about 4 times over a week, moving the furniture. Ended up getting rid of all the fleas. I could see the fleas in the clear canister after being sucked up.
 
shave the dog, give it a bath so to be squeaky clean, dress it up like Napoleon Dynamite, and then post pics with a thought bubble that reads, "Pedro offers you his protection."
 
1. advantage and advantix are both usually very effective at treating fleas, but if they go keep finding more fleas they might need it more than once a month. It is perfectly safe to dose 2x a month, but usually isn't necessary.
2. There are flea eggs all over your carpets now. Vacuum and steam clean every carpet, mop/bleach every floor, wash every piece of laundry in the entire house now while the dogs treatment is still fresh. Scrub every surface.
3. Revolution is great for cats
4. What monthly heartworm preventative are you using? Sentinel has the active ingredient in Program, which is basically birth control for fleas.
5. Encourage neighbors to use advantage/revolution/sentinel in their dog/cat, to help minimize local prevalence of fleas.
 
For really bad infestations you need to turn your house into a superfund site:

Carpet and upholstery: Use flea powder (get the good stuff from the vet)...work it into the carpet until the carpet turns white and then vacuum. Ditto for upholstery.

Flea bomb.

Shampoo dog everyday for a week or two with flea shampoo. Really work it in so the shampoo gets to the skin.
 
Knockout, available from your vet. Spray on carpet and furniture. Vacuum often. Retreat often. Use advantage monthly and watch for rice looking items (tapeworms) in their fecal waste and around their anal area which fleas like to eat. It will take a few months to get ahead of the infestation. I've been told by all the vets that I've known that for every one flea you can see, there are a few hundred more hiding.
 
Once the fleas are in the carpet, you have your work cut out for you. The vaccum will get a majority of the flea eggs, but the fleas themselves burrow to the bottom of the carpet fiber, making your vaccum pass over mostly ineffective. You have to use the flea powder on the carpet, vaccuming, even every day, w/o it will not be effective. They will survive and lay more eggs. Also the fleas come up to eat, bite you or an animal, then retreat back down into the carpet, making your window for vaccuming up adult/young fleas very minimal.
 
Somehow I managed to become infested with fleas in my old apartment (even though no animals ever went inside. and I'm certain they were fleas cuz my parents had pets so I know what they're like). Vaccuuming + fumigator didn't work. I had to spray the bejesus out of the carpets with flea poison, then vacuumed, then sprayed poison into the vaccuum (had to make sure those sucked up sons-a-bitches died before crawling out). And repeated once more for good measure a couple days later. I was considering washing my comforter blanket on my bed but it didn't have to come to that (probably a good idea though). BTW I bought that spray at the supermarket (probably RAID) so you don't need anything more fancy or expensive.
 
Here is a good trick to get the fleas out of the house: Get a pan of water and put a bit of dishwashing soap in it and then rig up a light over the pan. Put it on at night and watch how many fleas are at the bottom of the pan in the morning. The fleas are attracted to the light, and the soap breaks the surface tension of the water so the fleas cannot jump off of the surface and they sink real quick. You have to do this for about a month to break the life cycle of the fleas. Believe me, I had a flea infestation in Florida so damn bad that I was tempted to yank all of the carpet out of my house and put in tile. The light trick worked really well and I didnt have to poison my animals.

Some pet supply places actually sell this idea as akit, but you can diy and save some money.

Look towards your neighbor's yards. Likely they have a flea problem that's literally hopping into your arms. As long as they have the flea infestation, then there's no relief.
