Very limited laptop experience. So I'm just plain ignorant to this. Is it a software or hardware solution? Are there compatible PMCIA modems and non-compatible?

your question isn't totally clear. are you wanting to connect your laptop to a digital mobile phone to connect to the net? in that case you'll need a special connector!

yea I really screwed this post up. Sorry. But.... IBM stink pad with PC card Modem needs to operate in office environment that has digital phone system. Works from home based analog line fine. Went to a site that states

DESCRIPTION
TDK's award-winning modern technology gives you the ultimate fax/modem solution for the mobile professional. It keeps you connected wherever you are. Via phone line, the Cellular Companion 5630CE provides high-speed connections up to 56kbps using 56K ITU V.90 standard and K56flex. Out on the road, conveniently connect via your compatible digital PCS/GSM or conventional analog (AMPS) mobile phone using an optional TDK cable accessory.

they are addressing different compatibilities? But this isn't for cell phone but in office.

I always thought digital phone systems in offices were analog with some digital signals used just to control paging etc. not for the actual voice over wire?

There are special adaptors available that allow you to plug a modem into a digital phone system. If you need to do it right now, I suggest that you find a fax machine and look in the back of the fax machine. Almost all fax machines are plugged into an analog line and have a "line in" port for a regular phone connection in the back that you can plug into.

It is dangerous to plug a modem into a digital (PBX) system without the special adaptor, you could fry your modem and maybe even the whole computer.

Thanks, that's what I though initially. I can't imagine the little pc card being able to convert analog to digital. So this adapter, what is it, looks like where do you get one, proprietory?
A zillion questions and a large web to search. Neat tip about the fax machine.

Thanks again
