How to get out of this moving violation, running a red light!

I got caught by one of those cameras at intersections and now I have the option of paying the fine or going to court. The letter I received shows me entering the intersection at 12:50:32 and i'm 2/3 of the way through at 12:50:33 but I"m going 40 mph and the Red Time is 000.8 seconds so i'm wondering if it's possible for me to go through a red when the red time is less than a second? I probably entered the intersection on the yellow and then the light turned red, so i should have a good case right? I'm just wondering if anyone else has successfully appealed this in court. thanks.

If you pass the cross walk line and then the light turns red, it's legal. So make sure you passed the cross walk line then it turned red.

The time elapsed between the two pictures is 1.4 seconds, so I had about 0.6 seconds worth of yellow and then the light turned red on me.

I just took a defensive driving class, and here in NYC, entering on a yellow is a moving violation!!! (i did NOT know that before today)
If the light's yellow in NYC you MUST stop.

In what state? In Wa., we were told the exact opposite; if it turns red on you at all, it's running a red.

Maybe that's why we all hate Californian drivers. ;)

In traffic school, we were told running a yellow is a violation. You must stop or slow during a yellow light. I live in Ca.

If you're in the intersection AT ALL when its red, then thats illegal - thats the entire point of a yellow to warn you.

I was told the same as Entity. If you enter on a yellow, it is fine, as long as you are completely clear of the other side of the intersection by the time it turns red.

most places, you are subject to being ticketed for running a yellow, and if you see any type of red... you're basically dead :).

Ever since they installed those cameras, I've been stopping for all my yellows unless I know the cars beside me will pass.

anyway, you got photographed, you can say there was a truck behind you that looked like it couldn't stop in time, so you had to run the light.

I see this didn't teach you anything. Many people have been killed by @ssholes like you who jam on the gas so they can make a light. Only they don't really make it. One of these days you won't be so lucky. Consider yourself lucky to only get a ticket. You better think more about your driving habits as well.

Maybe I am a A you know what but My dad was Killed by a Idiot that ran a red light and hit him on his Motorcycle. If someone runs a light in front of me I usually aim for the Drivers Side Door. Period!!!

Do you think it's better to try to stop the car and end up in the middle of the intersection and have somebody hit you from behind? Sometimes you don't think about things like this you just act on it. If you see a yellow and you're close to the intersection then of course you're going to go through it, why would you risk stopping if there is traffic behind you. It's not like I floored it when i saw the red, those are the people who should be ticketed. As for called me an @sshole, that goes back to you. This is the first moving violation of my life, i've never had a speeding ticket or have been involved in any incident that may have endangered other people. So, you should think before you respond, just because there have been cases of people dying by people who break traffic laws, you can't accuse everyone of acting like this. I live in LA, so don't tell me there aren't any angry drivers here.

As I was told in Defensive driving:

In TX, yellow means stop if you can. If your too close to the intersection to stop cleanly, you better gas it and get through the light.

It's very difficult to judge if you're not there.
I once had to pull off a hard stop, but there was a car behind me, so I initially hit the brakes hard, let up a fair bit (giving the driver behind me a chance to react), then hit them again.
I stopped only a foot past the crosswalk.
But like I said, it's incredibly hard to judge.

pay the fine in pennies.

I tried this for a $15 parking tickect, which I appealed to no avail. At the cop house however I was not allowed to pay with 15 hundred legal, Lincon-Heads. A cop-er was is the room w/the receptionists and, when I prompted him for proof of the 'no penny payment' law, said that it was, I quote, "my law". So I threw the pennies in his face and before he could react I made a mad dash for my car and escaped.

And then I woke up from his last remark. I noticed his pistol belt and the lack of witnesses that would side with me. I then pulled out a fifteen worn Washingtons and left.

I was told at drivers ed that in MI if ur within 100ft when you see the light turn yellow, then you should go ahead because you probably cant stop. But anything more than 100ft you should slow down.

Yellow lights are too short. I'm a 16 year old driver and find it hard to judge. They should just make the time between when one light turns red and another turns green longer.

Be thankful all you got was a ticket instead of T-boning a family of 4 in a minivan. There is basically no defense for running a red light, anything you say, the judge has heard 100 times and it will just piss him off hearing it one more time from you.

Most of the actual laws state something to the effect of "if you can safely stop upon seeing the yellow, before entering the intersection you must do so"

And basically its a judgement call, and you can guess who that judgement goes in favor of about 99.9% of the time.

Sack up, deal with it.

And.. don't run red lights in the future if you don't want a ticket, or worse yet, death or disability to yourself or someone else.

If you're very close to the intersection and see yellow, keep going.
If you're not so close to the intersection and see yellow, need to stop now, otherwise you'll be running a red light, even you may be still running a yellow light before it turns red, if there is a cop, he/she will sure catch you.
