How to get out of jury duty?

Jeesh, just do the duty. I had to do it a few times, only sat on a jury once. It was a good experience and you should look forward to the cheap lunch they give you. 😉
 
I forgot to say, try serving as a witness in a murder trial. I got notified of that from a call I had about a year prior, that was interesting to say the least.

dont' know about the your state but in california you can just pay a fine of 1500

if this was your origional jury duty u can eather call and reschedule for during your spring break or when you have no school or go to court and when they start asking you question tell them you belive everything that prosecutors and police say is always a lie

technically it says you can be fined 6 month in jail/and or 1500. I haver never hird of anyone getting jail time. Also that is the reason that im not register to vote so they don't call me for jury duty

Thanks for the sane reply.. I called the courthouse and then they just asked me to show up when I no longer have school - something I'm totally cool with.. I'm not looking to skip out on jury duty - I just can't skip out on my finals...
P.S.
I didn't just skip jury duty because it was my 21st birthday - I actually did have class during the day (but I guess I could have skipped class and then partied after jury duty - regardless, I admit that it was a flakey choice)...

I think some here are missing the fact that the posted skipped out on the original summons. He is now being called before the judge to explain why. Around here, they started issuing citations when people skipped jury duty. Too many people think it's optional, but you are breaking the law if you skip out.

man. im glad some have said to do it and they would.

I have been called for jury duty twice. both times the case was settled out of court. I will go when asked and look foreward to it. Its just something to give back.
 
Tell them that you will not fairly decide on the verdict because you have a personal problem with the judicial system.
Worked fine for me.

So what makes students special? They are becoming educated, so I would think they would be a much better candidate than myself.
 
Show up in a tinfoil hat and tell them that its protecting your thoughts from the aliens and government. That should get you out of it.
 
Don't work on getting the judge to dismiss you. They've seen it all and it will just piss them off.

Instead, make it past the first few levels of selection. The next step is the interview with the attorneys. Both attorneys get a chance to dismiss each potential juror. In all cases I've seen, they always have this one final question:

Do you think you can clearly evaluate the evidence and arguments presented in court and make a clear and unbiased decision?

That's when you say "I think so, but I do have strong feelings against drunk driving (or medical malpractice, or whatever the case may be) because a very close friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver who was later set free."

EDIT: You can even add several "F" words to show your extreme prejudice.

That should almost guarantee the defense attorney will dismiss you in a heartbeat.

Judges get tired of people trying to get out of jurry duty. So your best best is to say you can't make it on the specific date(s) because of a paper that's due but you're willing to be on a jurry the week afterwards.

Or (my favorite), just start saying things like "he's guilty" and/or "hanging's too good for him" before the trial even starts.

If you look on your jury duty "invitation" it says specifically that STUDENTS ARE NOT EXEMPT FROM JURY DUTY. You may apply for an extension but you may not be exempt.

Yeah, go ahead and follow hawkeye's advice. If you get a judge in a bad mood, the first thing he's going to do is fine you for contempt. (they're not stupid... they know you're saying that to get out of jury duty), then he'll dismiss you from jury duty. (Has happened here, not to me though.)
 
Some people have no respect for their own country/county/state. It is pathetic. How would you like it if you were charged with a crime, you were innocent and nobody wanted to serve on your jury? Then you end up with a bunch of ignorant smacktards on your jury who don't know what is going on and they put you in the slammer for doing nothing wrong? COME ON PEOPLE do you civic duty, go in when called, be honst, and if picked out of the pool to serve on a jury, do it as good as you can, someone's life & future could depend on it. It is also sort of fun and quite interesting to see the judicial system in action.

f civic duty. I have better thing to do then sever on jury duly. Also should a person that is making $100 an hour go and sit on jury duty and make minimum wage just because it?s his civil duty? No. As for how would I feel if I was charge with murder for ex and was innocent well that is my lawyer job to get me of the charges and if I get convicted then it will be his job to appeal on base of incompetent jury
 
Depends on the state court of judge i guess ...my sister went to jury duty and asked to be excused because she had finals he following week and the judge said tough luckk..too bad...you have to stay...

You lucky they havent fined you or put out a bench warrant for skipping jury duty..here in california they are coming down on people skipping out...

I was beginning to think that people didn't care about their duties anymore, thanks for the warm fuzzies Ylen13 you pathetic self-involved, seflish waste of your communities space. I hope nobody ever turns a helping hand to you and people like you...ever. Civic duty is not something for you to decide whether it applies to you or not. You do have a civic duty as a citizen. It's amazing to me that you believe how much money someone makes should determine if they need to fulfill the obligation to serve, let alone whether you feel that you have "better things to do". So you saying a person that is making $100 an hour should take financial hardship as he will be only getting minimum wage when he could make $100 an hour just so he can satisfy his civic duty??
