Some colleges do take attendance. It depends on the place. But your point is still solid. If you don't want to be there leave. You or more likely your parents and student loans are paying for the class and must decide whether it is worth your time. I always thought it was kind of stupid to miss college classes unless I had something truly better to do.

sadly they do in tech school. The reason they give is that employers and the military like to check on attendance of the students they are paying for.

Funny but overdone. I've seen a couple of people do this at my university. It's not particularly creative. A more interesting one happened on the last day of lectures in one of my first year philosophy papers, dealing with free will. In the middle of the lecture two guys who were completely naked except for storm trooper masks ran to the front of the lecture hall and turned around, and had "I have free will" written in sharpie on their backs. It was classic.
