How to get into BF Bad Company 2?

I've been playing the Battlefield 3 beta for the last while, and I loved both the rush map and the conquest map which they released. I liked it so much that I decided that I would just pre-order the game on D2D. Since I haven't played much for multiplayer lately I decided I should practice with Bad Company 2 which I picked up for $7.50 on a Steam sale. I've been playing the game for a few nights now and I have to say I'm having a really hard time getting into it.

One problem I'm having is that the low level weapons seem simply useless. For the most part I am playing as an engineer since I find the Assault class too boring. The SMGs I find just take way too many hits to kill a player, even at short range. Not sure if the higher level kits are any better, but it must take an immense amount of time to unlock them considering I've played for 10+ hours and have only reached rank 5. The RPG which is included in the engineer kit is also pretty useless at the beginning. I've been able to damage a tank here and there, but for the most part I just end up dead because it takes so long to reload.

When I play rounds in this game, whether rush or conquest I find one of a few things will continually happen.

1) If I take a tank or APC I will get bombarded by rockets, run over mines, or get C4'd by someone I cant see.

2) Take a helicopter and I am blown out of the sky in moments.

3) Walk on foot (which considering the size of the maps takes a great deal of time) in which case I will usually get picked off by some sniper half way across the map.

4) If I do manage to get near an objective, and one or 2 kills, some third guy I didn't know was there will jump out and kill me while I'm reloading.

And the dust... dear god the dust... I know the game takes place in the middle east, but sometimes it's just obscene. I'll be running up a hill towards an objective and literally can't see 20 feet in front of me. Of course somehow the other team can see me, and pick me off with pin point accuracy.

And no prone? Really?

This is a game that I really want to get into, but it seems like the barrier to entry feels kind of high. Are the high level kits really that important, or am I simply out of practice? I never really had these problems in BF3 during the beta, so for a game which you think would be quite similar I am having a lot of trouble.

tl:dr

I suck at BF:BC2! Is this game just harder to get into than other shooters?

BFBC2 is a pretty easy game.

Play as medic to begin with, learn the maps a bit, run around like rambo. Also might sound a bit lame but if you are starting out try to be on the winning team, the game is magnitudes tougher if your team suck. Teammate1 dies to Enemy1 so Teammate2 runs in to find he is not only facing Enemy2 but Enemy1 that his previous comrade failed to kill, with rubbish teams this trend builds up until you are getting spawncamped. Also:

- Join a squad and spawn off them
- Dont wander about in the open too much, you will naturally learn sniper deathtraps as you play the maps
- Vehicles are 50/50 depends on the enemy, sometimes nobody on the enemy has RPGs or C4, sometimes everyone does

Winning team, be on it!

Best starter weapon is the primary included with assault...

Honestly i can't fly...be a gunner if you wanna clear some sky's or avoid bad pilots as they roam all over in BC2.

c-4 being planted makes a noise you should def hear and when i hear it i jump out and pick the guy off..

BC2 is a run and gun type of fps..a lot of running is involved .

Reload in cover i still make the same mistake you do once in a while but a nearby building or behind a tank might be best...

I like the fact myself BC2 has no prune...in BF3 in the beta map Metro it was very overused...the bush's and prune made for alot of campers .

BC2 is a great game. Yes it does take a while to level up but nowhere near as bad as BF2 if you remember that one.

Definitely play as a medic until you learn all the maps. Revive people like crazy, drop healthkits near teammates with low health and your score will soar. The first or second upgrade medic weapon is the Type 88 LMG I think...that is a great gun & very accurate.

Don't play Atacama desert or some wide open map -- that is too boring if you're just starting out. Stick with Arica Harbor or Oasis for more close quarters action and don't stand still -- keep moving!

Make sure your vehicle seat switch keys are easy to reach, so when your in an area with potential infantry you can hop on the machine gun and take them out (if you don't have a gunner of course). Also, never stop the tank for too long in one spot, as to avoid getting mortared by a recon, and it will also make it harder for someone with C4 to sneak up on you. Lastly, always scan your surroundings (best done in the machine gun position), and do it as often as you can. Your best defense in a tank is a good offense against hiding engineers, so be aggressive about it.

:edit:

You can take a look here to see how RPG damage works in detail (where tanks are weakest, etc), and how all the weapon stats actually translate. http://www.joinaclan.com/2010/04/battlefield-bad-company-2-weapon-damage-chart-and-other-breakdowns/

Just keep playing and you'll get better and enjoy the game more. I had almost the same problems you have when I started playing.

Don't go by yourself too much, spawn on your squad mates, learn the maps and where you can take cover.

I have issues as well, bought it and just can not get into it for MP. Alot of it for me was the going prone issue, IMO all tactical shooters need this aspect, its been around since R6 13 years ago get with the program people.

Perhaps i will give it another shot before B3 hits, as i wont get B3 till it hits steam anyways.

BFBC2 is best experienced in this order.
1. Play hardcore servers only.

Thats it. The game opened up a whole new world when i switched to hardcore servers.

re #4; If I at all suspect there is another guy close by after I've emptied my main gun I rather pull out the pistol and find him, or a safe place to reload, than try to reload right there and get ambushed. Killing someone with the pistol is awesome as well.

I don't think all the higher level kits are that much better, some I'd even call sidegrades. Can get plenty of kills with the lower level assault weapons with red dot (is that an unlock? I don't remember)

BF games generally take more hits to kill players. Not sure if the higher level kits are any better, but it must take an immense amount of time to unlock them considering I've played for 10+ hours and have only reached rank 5. Hold out for AK74U with engineer, shouldn't be too long. That's not a bad gun.The RPG which is included in the engineer kit is also pretty useless at the beginning. I've been able to damage a tank here and there, but for the most part I just end up dead because it takes so long to reload.Make sure you are engaging from behind cover and hiding between shots. Also, you should really only be taking them on one on one if you can get BEHIND them.

When I play rounds in this game, whether rush or conquest I find one of a few things will continually happen.

1) If I take a tank or APC I will get bombarded by rockets, run over mines, or get C4'd by someone I cant see. Take it slow and keep to the rear. I know that's counter intuitive, but you aren't really supposed to charge right in, you are supposed to let infantry sweep the area ahead of you and provide supporting fire from a distance. When you unlock VOPTIC weapons specialization, that will help

2) Take a helicopter and I am blown out of the sky in moments.Flying sucks in this game, leave it to the few people who have mastered it

3) Walk on foot (which considering the size of the maps takes a great deal of time) in which case I will usually get picked off by some sniper half way across the map. There are usually ATVs around you can use to get from point to point, makes it harder for snipers to kill you. Also, are you in a squad? Spawn on them!

4) If I do manage to get near an objective, and one or 2 kills, some third guy I didn't know was there will jump out and kill me while I'm reloading.Thats kind of the name of the game. If you have a squad, this will be less of an issue with an effective medic.

And the dust... dear god the dust... I know the game takes place in the middle eastActually, not at all...it's in South America, Russia and Alaska, but sometimes it's just obscene. I'll be running up a hill towards an objective and literally can't see 20 feet in front of me. Of course somehow the other team can see me, and pick me off with pin point accuracy.

See all those players with higher ranking than you? They've put in their time. Spend enough time playing and you'll enjoy it as well. I was the same coming over from run and shoot CS:S but this will require some team work. Run and gun on your own only get you so far. Definitely join a squad for more spawn options and help out with medpacks or ammo. If you have a good squad, it just rocks more. And flying that darn plane/copter will need practice but I hear joystick is where it's at. I still haven't gotten a joystick for it yet but can get by on keyboard after many crashes and practice on empty servers. I would also recommend pickup BC2: Vietnam when it's on sale for cheap too. I play that a lot more than BC2.

This is so true. A crappy squad is way better than not being in one at all. And being in a halfway decent squad (i.e. one that actually makes some attempt to play as a squad) makes the games something completely different (in a good way).

heh...I was pissed when I started playing a week after everyone else and had to deal with the starting weapons. I can't imagine starting now against all the level 50s.

I like engineer as well, I have over 12,000 kills mostly with tanks on Aricia map Rush mode. But now there's not as many people playing and you can't find a 24/7 map anymore.

Keep playing and repairing tanks' you'll get your guns and upgrades.

If you played a lot of CS it translates well into BFBC2. Run and gun is going to be superior 99% of the time to a standstill strategy in BC2.

A lot of the same mechanics in that right clicking to zoom and fire with sniper a lot of times results in a kill compared to a guy coming at you with an assault rifle ala CS.

The best advice here is to make sure you're in a full squad so you can spawn on your squad. Then you can quickly get back to the action and rarely need to run long distances.

I just bought this today, waited forever for it to download, open, and see not a single server in the list? Am I doing something wrong?

Can't find an online game to play with BC2?

server browser, then choose your options on the right side. I don't choose EA servers and I don't choose hard core.

Short version:

Spawn on your squadmates, use your class's special abilities wisely, and press Q a lot (but not all the time, there is a cooldown!).

The 3d spotting in BC2 is so mind numbingly frustrating when you are on a bad team. You take one shot and instantly 18 players are shooting at you through trees/walls. Demize wasn't lying when he said that people will ignore enemies in their line of sight to shoot red dots. It's ridiculous.

Yeah but it's so awesome when it does work right. I love spotting guys that are really far away but exposed and letting someone who's closer or a better shot take care of him. Makes me feel like a team player.
