How do u find out what frames per second you are getting in a game?? is it a utility u can install??? tia

in quake 3 at the console:
cg_drawfps [0/1] default: 0

changing the last digit from 0 to 1 will switch this on and off

For DirectX games you might give Fraps a try:

<< What is Fraps?

The program is designed as a generic tool to monitor framerates in DirectX games. The name itself is derived from the term Frames Per Second (FPS) which is what the program displays in the corner of the game's screen. It measures the framerate by monitoring calls to flip the screen at the end of each render.
