My friend has comcast cable at his apartment and I want to use my notebook with it, but I can't figure out the configuration needed to get it to work

could someone give me a fast rundown of the configuration needed for comcast cable? I am running XP and there is a cable modem that works fine that connects it to the ethernet card

If this is a DOCSIS compliant modem, most of the time you just need to set the IP and DNS addresses to be automatically assigned and connect the modem to the machine. Depending on the ISP, you may need a specific computer name, though I think that's being phased out for most cable accounts.

You can have all the software in the world it would not help.

Cause the system is probably set to use your friends computer MAC number as a Password.

You need a Router to clone the MAC.

Jack, my Comcast account doesn't require any special measures, I can connect any router or machine to the cable modem, reset and I'm connected. Several years ago, in the @home era, I needed a special computer name, but that requirement went away when Comcast finally did their own network.

Same thing for Comcast in my area. It's straight dhcp.

When I first setup my comcast cable. My modem had to be registered on there systems for it to work. There software was suppose to do it but it crashed a lot. So I had to call a technician to walk me through doing it manually.

Did you UNPLUG the power on the cable modem? That should be all that's required, when using WinXP.
1. Unplug power to cable modem.
2. Disconnect cable from desktop machine.
3. Connect cable to laptop machine.
4. Replace power to cable modem.
5. Power on laptop.
6. Done.

Interesting.... My own experience is similar to Jack's. I originally signed up with @Home and my connection was based on my old machine's name and MAC address. Later, I was assimulated by AT&T. I added a new machine and a router; everything worked fine. Then I'm again assimulated, this time by Comcast. I didn't want to install and run their conversion software (which I understood was only for modifying e-mail addresses anyway). A few weeks later, my internet connection dies. Troubleshooting the problem, I try reseting my router's MAC address to that of my old machine; my connection is back! Maybe Comcast varys by region?

Yep that is actually the situation.

In addition various providers some time switch to MAC registration without notify the customers. I came across instances of people running thier systems for long time without MAC reg. suddenly the system stop working.

After calling the ISP we found that the ISP decided to switch to MAC Reg. :Q:brokenheart:

The MAC address that is registered for Comcast in our area is the DOCSIS modem's MAC address. I can carry my modem to another location and plug it in and be connected.

Home Depot in Queens NYC.

You can not get out unless you show to the security guard at the exit your receipt and he examines the content of your cart.

Home Depot at Westbury NY Long Island, 25 minutes east of the above.

Randomly checking as in Queens is done (most of the time no one at the Door).

In other words security changes rapidly according to the neighborhood. :Q
