I have a Linksys wireless access point connected to a Linksys DSL router. My PC running WinXP home is directly connected and I also have another PC and laptop both running WinME using the wireless access point.

How can I get a G4 Mac, soon to be running 10.2, to use the wireless access point? What type of card can I install in the Mac and is is possible?

Thanks.

That should be able to work. You can also use an apple airport card, but I'm not exactly sure how to install on onto a desktop computer. Also another thing is that with the linksys one, you can move the unit around until you get the best reception. With the airport card, it may be at a bad place.

You just buy the apple airport wireless card (about $70 on ebay) and stick it in the slot inside the G4. There's a spot on the motherboard, it's pretty obvious how to put it in. Be sure to hook up the antenna.

Here's some detailed instructions:

and the airport card will talk to my linksys wireless access point with no problems?

Yeah, I believe they use the same wireless technology. The airport is apple's way of getting into the wireless sector.

There's a problem. I bought the airport card. However it seems that for some reason, the ONLY G4 Mac that does not have the slot for the adaptor card are PCI video versions. I have a Power Mac G4 400 with PCI video and in the place shown on the instructions above, there is NO slot for the airport card.

So now how do I get the airport card into the G4?

The Airport was available well before any SOHO mfg (linksys, Netgear, D-Link et al.) had 802.11b hardware. Your statement isn't incorrect necessarily but Apple has been in the wireless Sector, 802.11b variety, a long time. Early to mid 1999.

So now how do I get the airport card into the G4

Not sure about Mac drivers for available PCMCIA slot to PCI card adapters but if you have available PCI slots then I would explore that possibility.
