Increase your food intake, but exercise as well. Muscle weighs more than fat. ;)

It's quite simple actually. If you take in more calories than you burn, then you will gain weight. That's all there is to it.

If you go and work out, you're going to have to eat many, many more calories than if you sit on your butt and watch tv. ;) However, if you work out and gain weight, then that weight is being added as muscle mass, not flab. ;)

There are probably plenty of high calorie foods out there that are meant specifically for people wanting to gain weight.

Try the "seefood" diet. You see it, you eat it. Also lift weights at the same time...you should put on some mass. Damn.. 20lbs UNDER?? At 20lbs OVER for my height i'd look like a skinny mofo

I guess I"ll try the weight lifting since that's the majority opinion here. Thanks all, really appreciate it.

You don't want to eat tons of krispy kreme and chocolate, that's bad for you. You want protein and carbs, eat lots, don't eat a lot of the wrong stuff though. Really if you want to start gaining weight get the weight gain shakes/creatine/whatever and workout. Do only free weights and skip the machines.

Replace everything you drink with milk. That should solve your intake problem. Then, work out or you'll be another 20 inches over on your waist measurements.

here's my opinion. as has been said, you must consume more calories than you burn to gain weight. however, i'd guess you want to gain muscle and not fat :) so, you'd want to do low repititions with higher weight when lifting. be sure to take in plenty of protein & calcium(stuff like meat, beans, milk, yogurt, cheese, etc) to help build/maintain muscle & bone. give your body time to rest & recover, too. for instance, lift one day & rest the next. weightlifting tears down muscle & you need time & the right food to build it back. be patient, work steadily(don't overdo it) and you'll see improvement soon :)

I have been lifting weights for around 3 and a half months now and what I'd say to do is to get a Muscle and Fitness magazine with a workout plan in it. Bring it to the gym, tape it to the wall. When you goto the gym, follow the exercises exactly as it says. I have been following a plan from this magazine and I have seen a big difference in my physique in only a few months. I wouldn't say to totally disreguard machines. Free weights are more efficient than machines because of the resistance, yet there are a lot of things that machines can work on that free weights cannot. The workout plan you get should target a different muscle group each day, and some will be free weight exercises, and some machine. Also eat healthy and stay away from junk food. As said before, eat more than you will burn off. Also, never lift with free weights without a spotter ;)

incerase your caloric intake by 300-500 calories. don't take those weight gainer shakes (they have between 1000-2500 calories and that's way too much...it'll just make you get fat). make sure you keep your diet balanced- 60% carbs 20% protein 20% fat.
if you're going to do some lifting, then you'll need to increase your intake by about 600 calories. if you run as well (which i suggest you do to keep your most important muscle, your heart, in shape) increase your daily intake by 800 calories.

that should get you started.

I'm no expert or anything, but I try to read cyberpump, naturalstrength, hardgainer, and classicx.

Most of those muscle magazines, or as some people put them, "muscle comic books", really put many people on the wrong track. DON'T BUY OR READ THEM. They have tons of pictures of steroid freaks, along with descriptions of extremely high volume workouts that can only be handled by these steroid dorks. The steroids give them incredible recovery ability. They get big IN SPITE of their insane workouts. I have seen many workouts in magazines like Flex where bodybuilders talk about how they do 10-15 sets per bodypart. How insane is that? They are obviously pacing themselves and not working with as much weight or intensity as they really could.
If they turned up the intensity and cut back on the volume and frequency of their workouts they would do much better. Too bad they don't realize that. Think about it. If a person warmed up with a light set or two, and then did one very hard work set, should they be able to do another set? Of course not. People also forget that the body only grows in between workouts. Lifting weights 4 or 5 times per week is way too much for most people.
Here is a good training routine that I found. It is only 2 days per week, but if a person really worked hard at it, they would see some great results.

If anyone is skeptical of High Intensity Training, (HIT), read about The Colorado Experiment.

You should watch the amount of calories you eat per day and you should be taking in more than the daily value...and if you don't want to be fat you should lift...

Another thing that might help to gain weight is taking weight gainers.
