It doesn't even look burned. It looks more like someone tried to put a supertight HSF on and crushed the processor. Or maybe he dropped his computer???

I second that.

I would like to see the HSF. Looks like the core sheared. If the clip broke, maybe a 'tommy tech' repair. What did the guy use for thermal paste - SuperGlue????

Strange I fried a 1GHz Athlon and it didnt look anything like that. For some reason the core was never damaged on mine when I fried it.

Wonder why?

I agree with those who question that heat is solely responsible for the damage evidenced by the photo. The damage seems far more consistent with physical abuse or perhaps even the "cold water+hot glass" effect.

The fracturing is clearly from a sharp point from underneath the core. That sharp point to the left is a clear indication of a pressure point which caused the fracture. I've got some old Tbirds on the shelf and could pretty easily test the theory. ;)

Edit: Okay, the pressure was from under the core, but above the ceramic. It looks like a scoring mark along the edge of the core, like a flat screw driver was used to remove the core. This guy clearly stabbed the core with a pointed object, probably a flat screw driver by the fracture point. The reason he got fairly clean breaks, except in the middle, was because he had the processor in the socket when he crushed it.

Anyone else notice the solder melted and the components came off around the die? Thats a sign of heat, but it could have been done by hand too, thats easy enough.

That does not look like it was by a really hot processor, looks like someone stabbed it.

I had one do almost the exact same thing when I screwed my waterblock on too tight, it broke the chip in three places and also broke off the HSF clip
