How to fix: My Pomeranian puppy eats his feces...

The vet gave me a few packets of this "FOR-BID powder" to sprinkle on his Iams puppy food, and it is supposed to cure his desire for eating his poop. However, this does not seem to be working and he is still chowing down on it. I try to pick up his poop immediately, but the darn dog will grab a piece and run off with it. Does anyone know of a true fix for this bad habit?

Forbid (TM)(R): This is a powder supplement added to a dog's food. It is thought that this makes the feces taste bad for a coprophagic dog. Note that this must be applied to the food of the dog whose feces is being eaten. It is by veterinary prescription only. The efficacy has not been proved to the satisfaction of the authors. Note also that this can only be given to dogs, so will only be effective with autocoprophagia or intraspecific coprophagia.

A multivitamin is supposed to help, but I think you just need to train him not to eat poo. My dog friend says they eat poo because it physically seems to resemble regurgitated or processed food in that it's semi solid and warm. I think you just need to punish him whenever your dog wants to chow down on the brown log.

This is true.

Quit teaching it such bad manners :p

But like said, he'll grow out of it. Had a dog that would eat his own, eat the cats, whatever. He eventually stopped. Gross as hell, but at least he stopped.

Weird, weird stuff.

sometimes they do it because they think it's bad to poop, because they've been punished for pooping in the house before, and just equated it to "pooping is bad". if you think thats it, try rewarding the dog for pooping (hehe).

Ah yes, the age-old question of how to cure a turd burgling dog. Good luck. Some grow out of it, others will develop a life long craving for nature's tootsie rolls.

Not only is there little consensus on WHY some dogs seem to develop a penchant for chomping tootsies, particularly their own, but there is little consensus on what to do about it since the root cause is not understood; only a myriad of possibilities to eliminate by trial and error.

Just plug one or more of the following terms into a search engine and read up: autocoprophagia, coprophagia, dog, eating, poop,

You'll find many different opinions and advice. You just have to try as many things as it takes, and even then you ultimately may accomplish little more than discouraging the dog from doing it when ever you're around.

I house/pet sit for my sister a couple times a month when she leaves for the weekend. My sister's Amstaff raids the kitty litter box for granola bars all the time - luvs 'em.

Then she will come wake me up by pressing her kitty litter peppered nose up to my mouth and give me big sloppy dog tongue. Of course, its not enough to lick my face, she's got to try and get her tongue IN MY MOUTH. NICE!

I go running into the bathroom spitting and sputtering, then spend a minute or two washing my mouth out.

As to the question of how 'normal' it is? First of all, far more dogs find cat poop to be a delicacy than their own or another dog's poop. But to answer the question, my mother rescues dogs from the pound and adopts them out. We've had in the neighborhood of 70 - 80 dogs, not a single one of them has demonstrated a desire to eat its own or another dog's poop.

She also rescues cats, so we always have a few cats around. Perhaps a dozen or so of the 70 - 80 dogs have demonstrated an interest in eating cat poop.

Talk to your vet. I think there is some kind of dietary supplement you can give them which makes their poop smell bad to them (if that's possible).

Mine used to be notorious for picking up poopsicles (frozen), nawing on them and running around the yard with them. Pretty disgusting...

I'm sure other than eating his own poop his mouth is very clean.

get a cat, they don't do that.
I got a cat, and my dog promptly ate the cat's turds. She came trotting into the living room with cat litter on her nose, and her breath smelled like... well, sh!t. Now the litter box is called the snack bar.
