Hi all...

Does anyone know how to find the Windows login name of the current user on a Win95/98 machine. Something like the "whoami" function of Unix.

On some machines you can find it from the Start menu, because there is a "Log Off xxxxx" entry... but not always.
NT and 2K is easy because there is a system variable (username) defined when the user logs on.Thanks

I think there is no one command can do this thing.
but you can load regedit, and try to find the login name
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon\username

Got to start, run, and type sysedit. Click o.k. That will bring up the system editor in notepad. Now I am in ME right now, so I cant double check this. From memory only. There is definitely a list of user logins in one of the ini files. System.ini I think. Scroll down to the very bottom of that file and it will say something like, users or passwords, something like that. If you have trouble, I can give you the exact path, but not until monday. Only got NT, ME and 2000 at the crib. Well, I got any version of 9X but I aint loading it to answer your question. :) Good luck.

Hit the start button. A menu option will come up that will say Log Off xxxxx.

Edit. Oops, I didn't read the original post close enough. Do a search for *.pwl files. that will give a list of users.
