How to find out what cd key someone is using?

My friend lost his windows xp cd key. Is there a way he can recover his cd key from his computer to see what it is? I know it is a legal copy because I was there when he bought it. If his computer crashes and he has to reinstall he is going to be screwed.

Anyone?
 
Thanks for the help. Do you know how to run the application that was in that thread? I unzipped it and clicked on the.exe file but nothing happens.
