How to find Office 2007 Key

I was attempting to setup a dual boot on a spare laptop with XP and Ubuntu and somehow broke Windows, it blue screens whenever I try to boot into it. A repair install won't work either, it seems like it doesn't recognize the hard drive as having an NTFS partition. And stupid me didn't run Bel Arc Advisor before attempting this project, so I lost my MS Office 2k7 key. Is there any way to get it since I can access the original partition from Ubuntu just fine.

Try this with the windows XP CD

load XP disc
go into recovery console
fixboot
fixmbr
reboot
DONE!

I already tried that. Like in my original post I said the disc doesn't recognize the partition as being NTFS, it just keeps saying drive not found when I try the recovery commands.

If you can attach your hard drive to another computer and it can be read, you can utilize the Jellybean Keyfinder and tell it to attach a hive. Point the program to your X:\Windows folder and it should pull up the keys for Windows and Office.

Maybe you better just get the MS Office key off the back of the jewel case it came in?

I bought the laptop with Office 2007 preinstalled.

I think I'll have to pick up an enclosure tomorrow and try MJB. Hope it works.

Look in your stuffs-that-came-with-your-computer for an OEM Office COA with the key on it.

I ended up using this nifty tool: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

Worked great. I just had to copy the registry folder and used this tool to find the key.

bruceb, Tesk Disk seems like a good tool, just a bit too complicated for me. It did tell me that my NTFS size was wrong so that's why it wasn't booting. I tried to fix it, but somehow I screwed up the entire MBR. Oh well!

Thanks to all who helped!

Well at least you got your Office License codes back.
The program I linked to, if you read through all the
documentation, should have been able to fix the Boot
Record trouble you had, in which case, you would not
need to reinstall everything or do an Image Restore
(if you had a backup Image, which you should do with
Ghost or TruImage)

Yeah, no sh!t. WTF?

If it were that easy, would you think I would post? I'm not an idiot.

Any legitimate preinstall should have the COA sticker on the bottom (usually) of the laptop...

if all else fails call the provider...if anything it should be bundled on the 'rescue' disk as a one disk install (I hate those but it gets you back up and running).

If you are trying to rip a 2k7 key, you are going to kill the install on whatever machine you ripped it from. You are allowed 2 uses (PC/Laptop) non-concurrently.
