I was playing a game of NHL 2000 on Electronic Art's server/matching service and this one guy got angry at me for beating him. He listed my IP# on the board for everybody to see and called me a cheater and a bunch of other names. I have a couple questions.

1) How did he get my IP# to begin with? We are playing on EA's "player matching" service and there are no "search" or "whois" commands that I can see anywhere. Is there a program that you can use to see the other person's IP# ?

2) Should I worry? What can he do to my computer or me? What about all those other people that might have got my IP# when this guy put it out there for everybody to see?

3) How did he get my damn IP#? I don't understand!!!!

assuming you're directly connected with somebody, a netstat will show all open connections with remote address and port

What is a netstat?? Is it a program??

What do you mean when you say "directly" connected with someone? This was over EA's server's and that's why I am very confused because I don't think we were "directly" connected.

Open up your DOS prompt and just type netstat and all will become clear to you :)

Directly connected means that your computers had a IP connection. If you were in a public chat room, (usually) there isn't a direct connection, if you were in a private chat session there probably was. Also, when you were playing with him, you of course had a direct connection, which allowed him to get your IP using netstat.

Anyway, if this can remain a problem depends on whether your IP is dynamic or not. A dynamic IP means that your IP changes whenever you connect to your ISP. Nearly all dial-up services have dynamic IPs. Just reconnect and the IP he has is useless.
If you're on cable or DSL, chances are that your IP is static, and if someone else has got your IP, you can't easily change it. If he's an idiot, he might try some web-based attacks and you should install a fire wall - see the URL posted above for more information.
