i tried knocking but i couldnt tell, is there any correlation between an outlet in the wall and where the stud would be?

They're directly to the left, or to the right of your electrical outlets (the outlet boxes are nailed to the side of a stud)
each stud is typically 16" apart

Sheetrock is nailed or screwed to the wall with nails with big heads. Measure to where you think a stud should be then wave a magnet over the wall to see where it sticks. that nail is in the center of a stud.

Cheap Stud Finder.

just tried that, but i couldnt see anything, probably since i painted my walls red

Alternatively, just start pounding nails in. Rinse and repeat until you hit a stud :p

that is what i do, i keep some of the tiny finishing nails for this job, its the only way i can find them

Electronic studfinders don't work on my walls (they appear to have drywall, then some kind of plaster, then knockdown on top of that)... I've tried 3 different models and they all think that my whole wall is a stud. (guess they make their determination based on wall density)

I remember my grandfather used to have a little magnet mounted inside a plastic thing, the magnet would pivot towards the nails in the wall... can you still buy those?!? All I've seen is this electronic garbage that doesn't work at all for me. (although the beeping and the lights are very impressive...)

I had to buy a deep sensing one, got it at menards for $30 I think. I went through 3 laters of 1/'2 drywall, but that was the deepest it would go.

I don't mean to be a jacka$$, but are you sure you were using it correctly? Usually the lights will come on if you press the button before you put the studfinder on the wall or if you put the studfinder directly over an electrical line.

To sum it up:
1.Tap the wall, the stud will sound (even feel) harder, the non-stud area will sound/feel hollow
2.look for an outlet, the stud will be directly to one side of it
3.look for filled in nail/screw holes (if the taper/painter did a crappy job you will see the indentations of the nails/screws)
4.use a TINY nail first and see if you hit it
5.use a stud finder (for babies not real men ;) )

Get a big magnet, like a speaker magnet, and move it along slowly and feel for it to tug, you just found a nail and a stud. Man you guys gotta learn to get ghetto.

Hammer in a tiny nail. Once you find the stud just fill the holes with white toothpaste.

If you have a hole in the wall, stick a wire(coat hanger?) in there and feel for the stud.

Punch the wall hard, putting your weight into the punch. When you break your hand, you've found a stud.
