how to figure out window manufacturer?

Gibson486

I cracked my top window last year. It was small, but it has grown to a big crack....I am trying to figure out the manufacturer, however, I guess window companies do not pimp their brand out on their product. Is there a hidden place to find the brand so i can get a replacement sill? Am I going to have to bend over and have a window replacement guy take me for all he can?

DO not know...It's new enough where you can remove each sash from tabs on the top....I am not sure if that is a "newer" feature though...It is not held by stops, but with that white putty stuff, so I am guessing just replacing the glass is not an option.

Contact some window glass repair services. Tell them the size and they should be able to give you quotes.

heh....if i knew, then this thread would not exist😉
You took that in stride pretty well haha.
Does your window look like this?

Dear God, a nineteenth century window. With that said, replacing a pane of glass is easy, read up on it or call a handyman.

How is it possible to own a house but, know nothing about owning a house? Sorry, just my inner grump coming through (I've been watching God Bless America).

A glass or window company can replace the pane for you.

I'm in the same boat, OP. No clue who to go to to replace the window.

It's not "just a pane of glass" - anyone can replace that. Double-pane sealed, with a sealed frame - the whole window part that moves up and down is a single unit - there is no disassembly to replace the glass possible.

Yeah, that is the point. I want to just replace the pane, sill, sash, whatever you call it. I want to simply do it myself. Obviously, i can call a window company, but that wold cost the most. Then, i could call a glass company, but it is a double pane window, so i would probably get raped for just replacing the glass.

We had a cracked window last year. Took that part of the window out of the frame, drove it to a window guy, 30 minutes and $40 later I was on my way back home.

there should be a local siding and roofing store near you. they specialize in siding and windows. take your broken window sill to them and they will tell you what you should do about it.

if they cant find a replacement sash for it (which they probably will) then theyll tell you who can take it apart and replace the glass itself. normally this is possible to do, but like you said you save more on labor by just buying a new sash entirely.

It was actually cheaper for us to buy standard sized windows and cut out bigger holes in the walls then to have custom made windows for this old house.
