How to erase video on a digital video cam?

I've got a Sony DCR-PC1 and I wanted to know how how to erase a tape of video. Not just tape over it, but erase the content so that there is none.

uhh, why don't you just go to the beginning and press record while the lens cap is on and let it record over all your "stuff"

Destroy the tape. DV tapes are dirt cheap - cheaper than VHS.

Yes, MiniDV tapes are cheap. Go to Walmart. They have 6 packs for the same price as their VHS 6 packs.

I work in the A/V lab at school and we buy our MiniDV tapes by the carton - 50 tapes. They last roughly a week between all the sporting events that need to be covered.

However, it's not good to mix brands of tape - that dirties the heads MUCH faster because each manufacturer has their own chemical formulation on the tape and when that crap mixes, it gets very not pretty very fast.

Thanks for the reply. As for the chemicals thing, ouch... too late. I've been using Sony, Fujifilm, and Panasonic, switching around fairly often. Anything I can do to clean it?

Like someone else said, just record with the lens cap on. If you want the snow I guess you could put it in front of the tv on a channel that has snow on it and record that?
