How to enable both S-video out and monitor out simultaneously?

MichaelD

Lifer
I have a GF4 4200 in my HTPC. I have the monitor out hooked up to a monitor and the SVideo out going to the receiver for video in. I can't seem to get BOTH working at the same time; they both will work, but not at the same time.

I have to reboot the box and remove one or the other cable everytime I want to switch screens.

How do I accomplish this, please?

This is not good news...I've spent so much already. Damn.

What inexpensive card supports dual monitors?

PCI or AGP?

i have a TI 4600 and it supports dual mon and will do 1 mon / Svid
the ATI AIW cards do it

also the Matrox PCI vid cards do it as well

What do you see when you go to the "Advanced" screen from the graphics properties window? On my Ti 4200, I can select how to spread my signal across two displays, or the same screen on two at a time, and I believe more options as well. I haven't needed the S-Video out (or the DVI) on that adapter card yet.

It's an AGP card.

KIWI,
Thanks for the idea. There was nothing about dual displays or spreading the output over multiple monitors, but in the Troubleshooting tab, there was a button that said "My connected TV is not being detected." You click and you have to restart. Upon restart, both monitors worked for the BIOS and intial splash screens...then the SVideo out died. 🙁 Which brings me back to Anubis' intial diagnosis that the 4200 doesn't support dual monitors. 🙁

A Ti4200 supports dual monitors. I use it everyday...

My old PNY 4200 Ti had no problems with dual monitors. It could even run them at two different resolutions.

guess i was wrong

if you arnt seing the options to select a second output update the drivers for the card

Although I had not previously been aware of the potential conflict, it seems that nVidia driver software can get tangled up in its own figurative "feet". Try an uninstall and reinstall. Anything with your card maker's name, or nVidia's, in the Add/ Remove, take it out. Reboot and put in the matching CD that came with the graphics card. The Wizard may not ask for the CD, or may not recognize an "INF" file on it when it does look at the CD. Not to worry. You'll get a default driver from Windows that will work adequately until you run the CD.

When the install runs, it will be asking about a second display early on. My recent second time around, I ignored most of the special options. In my case, I'd had two prior adapters with GeForce GPU's before the Ti 4200, and didn't uninstall the software, although I did remove the device from my Device Manager list each time. Apparently there was some time bomb ticking away like a Trojan, waiting for still another change, and the Ti 4200 set it off. That system developed a nasty and rapid Resource Drain that made the PC crash within three to four hours.

The Uninstall/reinstall cured that problem. Maybe it will enable you to run the TV at the same time as the primary display device.

He fixed it!!! With his permission, I'm posting the fix.

To enable dual monitors on an NVIDIA card right click your desktop and goto properties>settings tab>advanced properties. Click on the tab with the Nvidia logo. On the popup nav bar their should be an option for NView Display Mode. It won't appear until you plug in the S-Video cable. You can then change the NView modes to single, dual, and clone display, and your current display. Enjoy!

I guess I was ignorant that what I REALLY wanted was "Cloned Display" and not "Dual Monitors."

I DID get dual monitors to work on my own, but not the Clone setting, until Tfinch2 hooked me up.

Thanks, Tfinch2! 🙂

Also, thanks to all you guys that suggested fixes. *sniffle* I love this place.
