boot.ini reads as follows:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

How do I edit this file so that the computer simply starts in XP. I know I could set the boot delay to 0, but that feels wrong.

The best way in WinXP is by going to "Control Panel - System - Advanced - Startup and Recovery - Settings" which gives you the options. I set my timeout at 3 seconds (dual boot between Win2k and WinXP), but 0 seconds is o.k. too.

If you prefer, you get the option of manaully editing your boot.ini file from this panel also. You can set the timeout to any number you want.

As I see it, the way your boot.ini currently reads, Windows 98 should not be presented as an option. You only have 1 partition listed, and that has XP on it.

OK, maybe I was confused, I did have 98 and XP dual boot. Now it just gives "Windows XP Professional" and "Microsoft Windows" as the boot options. I assumed the second was 98.

Then just remove the last line of your boot.ini file

C:\="Microsoft Windows"

and the Microsoft Windows "option" will go away.

You can set the timeout to -1 if you never want to see it. Just need to keep XP as default before doing that.
