Ok so this is not guaranteed but if you follow the different steps below you will notice that you will feel better about doing work, going to school, and taking tests. Enjoy!
- Take 10-15 minutes every night to review what was taught in each of your classes that day. It may be difficult at first but over time it will become routine and once it comes around to studying for a test you will recall most of the content you reviewed which will drastically decrease the amount of studying you will need to do the night before.
- Don?t cut you sleep time! There is no point in staying up into the early morning hours the night before a test. You?ll be tired and restless for the test. The more sleep you get the more relaxed and confident in the material you will be. The amount of sleep varies from person to person but the average hovers around eight hours a night.
- If you have a lot of homework cut it down into smaller tasks and organize it on a sheet of paper. Keep this paper with you when you are doing your work and once you complete a task, remove it from the list. Each task should take no more than 10 - 15 minutes to complete. Reward yourself once you have completed a task or all the work. Tell yourself that your not going to go out until the work is done or that you can have another piece of candy/chocolate once you complete each task. This gives you a sense of satisfaction and progress while doing your work.
- Don?t miss school. This has been a problem for me and I notice that in the weeks I miss a lot of class my mark on the following tests is greatly affected. Weather you are paying 100% attention or not being in the class is enough for you to grasp at least 25% of the material without even trying. You won?t learn anything at all if your not there.
- Develop routines. Everything has to start somewhere and good homework habits are no exception. By getting into the routine of doing your homework right when you get home or after supper you are able to work around this schedule and make sure that nothing conflicts with this time. The most successful students are the ones who know when to get things done and when they don?t have to be working.
- Take good notes. The neater and cleaner notes the easier they will be able to read when you are studying. If you keep your notes clean all the important information will be visible without little effort. Some people spend more time trying to find the information than actually studying. Heres a little structure help. Always place the date at the top right of the page, the topic of the page on the top line and underlined. Use a different colour pen for sub-topics within the page (red for headlines, black for notes). Keep notes short and concise. Star (*) or highlight information when the teacher says "This is important" or "This is an excellent test question" as it will probably show up again.
- Try to always do your homework in the same spot. This spot should be comfortable, have a writing area that is at stomach height when sitting up straight, and have good lighting. Starting with a desk that is cleared makes the work seem less overwhelming. Only keep what your working on on the desk and move everything else off to another place. Place your task sheet (see above point) at the top right or left hand side of the desk, which ever you prefer and prepare everything else before hand so that you are not constantly getting up. You may want to include these items on your task list. Pencil, eraser, sharpner, pen, dictionary, agenda, calculator, drink, light snack. Do not eat alot while working on your work as it will slow your progress and tire you.
