Wife wants this blocked for a while, daughter has been watching to much Anime. I know we should talk to her (we already did). But I do want to limit temptation.

I now you can block it tnru the firewall but I cant seem to find the source IP range of you tube.

Thanks in advance.

I also want to block it when I play CSS, kills my ping.

My D-Link has a built in filter for stuff like this. But....if she knows what she's doing she can probably get around it. What might be simplest is to do it at the client (on her PC) level.

Personally, I think that both are self defeating. She will either defeat them (which is not that hard to do - client or server level) and/or resent the limitations. What you might want to consider is just establishing some rules and then view router logs after the fact. In that case, you're leaving it up to her....watch after a certain time (something you can check in the router logs) or whatever and her PC is revoked. It might come off a little better - making it her choice.

Good luck!

no she is pretty PC naive, mostly wathces free japanese anime in youtube, I just want to block it off at certain times like 10pm until 4pm the next day.

I can possible do it at her PC (client side)but would much rather do it thru the router so I can turn it off and on at my PC

I can do it thru the firewall setting of the router but it is asking for a IP range to block and I cant seem to find the IP range you tubeuses.

Its one of those things that kids do when they are so engrossed in something that they completely loose track of time and by the time they know it its 12am and its a school night. BY blocking it at the times we specify it will decrease the chances of her getting punished. She is a pretty obedient daughter but she has not sense of time when she is watching those shows.

thanks

If the router is in your room/office, why you don't remove the network cable from the router (that is what my brother in law does). I know it sounds weird, but it works great for him.

If you are looking to cut her time on Youtube at 10.00 PM, why you don't disconnect her PC completely? You can do that in the router.

BTW, the router has a username and password, so you can change the settings and then she will not able toi change anything on it.

ping youtube.com and get the ip's ftw

or...

you should be able to remotely do this on her computer, just have a batch file that swaps her hosts file across the network, then youtube goes to kittenwar or homework.com or something.

208.65.153.242
208.65.153.243

208.65.153.251

hosts file would be the best solution...

Try this software...I used it to manage/monitor my son's computer/web access to specific times of the day for a set # of hours/minutes per day. I found it to be VERY helpful. You can even give her more time on weekends if you want. Gave extra PC time if his grades were good etc. VERY helpful stuff. Beats trying to block/limit every iffy website that's out there

Try it free for a month.

I would write a batch file to just copy a hosts file with youtube spoof and without youtube spoof and schedule the task in windows.

thanks for the suggestions

For now i just disabled JAVA in explorer and Firefox.

I wanted to do it from the router since so that I don't have to got to her computer all the time to enable and disable JAVA.

Editing the host file also will also involve going into her computer off and onto enable her viewing.
I tried blocking it thru the firewall, range of 208.65.153. 240 ------> 208.65.153.251 but I am still able to access you tube.

I should be able to do this thru the router firewall right?

NS lookup gave me the following IPs

208.65.153.251
208.65.153.253 ***
208.65.153.241
208.65.153.242
208.65.153.245

you don't seem to have 208.65.153.253 IP blocked. Add that and see if it helps
