It's simple...you count the number of devices, or chips, on the RAM. 🙂
Unfortunately, the heat spreader may be in the way. 🙂 If it's a 256Mb RIMM...and it has memory chips on both sides (there are 8 per side), then its 16-device. If it's a 256Mb RIMM...and it has memory chips on only one side, then it's 8-device. The 16-device 256Mb RIMM has a part number of MR16R082GBN1-CK8, while the 8-device 256Mb RIMM is MR16R1628AF0-CK8. >>
Even though I didn't look CLOSELY because I didn't have to, this "Unfortunately, the heat spreader may be in the way" is probably the main problem with identifying whether it's 8 or 16 device.. I'll take a closer look tonight so that I can help that other guy out..
