How to disable S.M.A.R.T. drive monitoring?????

I have a WD 3.2GB Caviar 23200 HD that will not pass WD's diagnostic testing - it will fail with a 207 error code (SMART status failed before the media scan). I fdisked it and formatted it (w98) but formating would stop at 71% (have done this twice). Using WD's DLG 2.8, I wrote zeros (low-level formatted) the drive - it wrote to the entire drive and reported no errors. I'm at a stopping point!

The drive may be good but with a corrupted SMART monitoring ability that is interfering with its operation. The mobo I'm using doesn't have SMART monitoring ability so I don't use it. I want to disable SMART monitoring AT THE DRIVE and retest but haven't found a utility that will do this. Anyone have any links to a drive utility that might do this? Any other ideas? Help would be appreciated.

The only place I have seen an on/off switch for S.M.A.R.T. is in the BIOS settings. If your mobo does not support it, you should not be getting it. Something is wrong with your drive I would say.

I agree with corky, I have only seen SMART in the BIOS. If it isn't there try a different HD.

SMART errors are typically a good indicator of the drive failing on you with physical defects...sometimes you can lowlevel format the drive and it will reassign blocks...but other times, you might as well just check and see if the warranty is still valid and ask for a replacement
