I updated my Quicktime software recently, and now I get a little Q in my toolbar every time I reboot. I can right-click and hit exit, but how to I disable it from loading? I can't find it anywhere. Nothing about loading at startup anywhere in preferences.

Wrong forum.

If you have 2k / XP, Start -> Run 'regedit', browse to :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and modify the QuickTime entry to be blank. There ya go.

Same thing here, whenever a quicktime file is opened (or even an embedded qt file in a browser is run), qttask.exe is re-checked or re-entered in the startup folder in win98se. Even if you uncheck or remove the startup task, it will reapply it next time you run a quicktime file.

There doesn't appear to be a relevant setting in the configuration files of quicktime 6. There is no entry for quicktime startup in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Thanx for any assistance~

Configure it (right-click, there should be an option). If not, close it and delete the fcking qqtask.exe or something to that extent. I hated it.

It will restore itself upon the first launch of QuickTime. You need to configure it not to launch, or delete the damn launching exe

All you have to do is goto Quicktime Prefs. in Control Panel and turn it off. Life is simple if you choose to make it such:)

lol, trust ATOT to provide all the geeky answers, all that was needed was to go to quicktime preferences and uncheck the box that says "QuickTime system tray icon" :p

Um... dude ? This brings up the very same configuration screen in quicktime -- there's no option there. Life isn't always that simple

I also renamed qttask.exe. I could not find any option in preferences. I hate how companies try to take over your system, and don't give you the option of turning off their obtrusive features.

Thanks for reminding me this is in the wrong forum, but I thought Off Topic had no boundaries.

Running msconfig never worked for me. It would always reinstall itself in whatever startup script it wants to be in. You have to right click on it in the taskbar, go to "preferences" and look through that. It should have an option to turn it off (mine did).

quicktime -> Edit -> Preferences -> Quicktime Preferences -> 4th checkbox
granted its hard to find but doesn't hurt to take the time to look :)

As I said earlier, it's not in all versions of QT 6. The option to turn off the startup function came in QT 6.01 I believe. I know it is in 6.02 & 6.1
