How to determine a harddrive is 2Mb or 8Mb cache?

If you are buying a retail boxed drive it will be clearly marked as a feature. In Western Digital's case, the drive model will end in "JB" instead of "BB" for 8MB vs 2MB cache drives.

Yea physically look at the harddisk and write down the model number, then go on the manufacturer's website and it will (hopefully) say there.

or you could type in the numbers found on the ram chip(s) of the hard drive into google and look at the specs for that 😉

If my hard drive is already installed and I do not have the serial number and retail box, can I check if it is 2Mb or 8Mb using software?

Maybe try watching for the hard drive model numbers when they are detected by the BIOS at startup. Check fast though 😉 Also, you should be able to find the model number in the Windows Device Manager, then look up the model number either at Google or the manufacturer web site. Chances are though, that if it is an older drive you are asking about, that it probably has a 2MB cache. But check to be sure.
