How to Design a Lighting System for a Parking Lot

Dedpuhl

Lifer
I have been given the task of designing a lighting system for a large parking lot. I am a Civil engineering student, so my background on lighting is minimal. Do any of the EE's or electricians on the board know of any good places I could look for some general design criteria?

I'm a EE, but the best i can tell ya is go to walmart or something and look up...

You'll quickly realize most parking lot light systems suck..but eventually you'll see a good one and you can base it off that 🙂

If you want a really bright one, go check out your local car dealerships, you practically have to wear sunglasses at a car lot at night.

Lighting isn't much about EE, although you need that to actually put it together...lighting is about security, safety, and impact. Talk to a couple security managers, facilities engineers, or contact your city hall planning department and gather the info you need. Police departments and public works departments are good too.

be sure to contact someone from the city to find out the specific requirements for your city. the city will require a certain number of lights depending on the size and traffic of the lot. they have a bunch of requirements.
