How to decode an older (late 80s) Mercedes Benz VIN code? **FYI, it's only 13 characters, not the traditional 17**

I'm looking at purchasing a used Mercedes Benz that appears to be in mint condition. I have the VIN number, but it's only 13 digits...not 17 like cars today. I've tried on MB enthusiast websites, but they all rely on the same 17 digit code (as does CarFax and like services). I specificly want to find out the year of the car so i know of any recalls or known problems with this car. FWIW: the car is an 80s 300 SE in what appears to be mint condition...perfect exterior paint, interior leather seats look perfect, and that's all i could gather without talking to anybody yet. Any info would be very appreciate.

man i had this problem last month i think. there's a way around it, i think if you look hard enough there are more numbers printed before the 13, or maybe after. try and match up the numbers you do have to a VIN decoder chart and see where you are then.

i mean the one car i was looking at was a 1988 560SL and it had the vin plate about halfway up the windshield...

Wow that is really weird. I have a 1980 450SL myself and it has the normal length VIN code. On my car there is a small vin plate right on the drivers side windshield. It has the VIN printed on that. Its like a little tab really. The only thing I could suggest is try contacting the MBUSA club. If someone there doesnt know about it, its probably a fake VIN then haha. Seriously though I think they would be your best bet, the only problem is I dont know if they would help non members or not, I bet they would if you can get ahold of them. I am not a member yet but I think I will join soon, looks like a great club. Oh I just thought of another you could try alt.auto.mercedes they have lots of knowledgable people there. Enjoy
