Just wondering how you guys deal with it. Is there a trick to storing a large number of files so when windows explorer trys to access the files or display them, its does not stall for a few minute (actually like around 10 mins, yes is a 120 GB hard drive almost full of just images)

Or databasing program to store all of them?

I've noticed the same thing on my xp rig... it doesn't seem to cache thumbnails like it should.... so EVERY freaking folder with pictures in it takes forever to open because its reading the thumbnails for the pictures... this is not good, because you aren't allowed to anything while its working... :/

Any fixes? I've tried unchecking and rechecking "cache image thumbnails" in the view properties.... makes no difference, whatsoever.

How about turning off thumbnails? If you really need thumbnails, consider investing in Ulead PhotoImpact and constructing an album, and use it for this purpose instead of using Explorer. If you can afford SCSI, it would light a fire under that process too.

I kinda got around this problem by limiting the number of images per folder so it doesn't take forever for the thumbnails to load. So now I have a maze of folders :(.

At 10MB per image + more for TIFFs I'm gonna need some serious HD space soon.

Get an external Firewire or USB enclosure and keep your images on a separate drive. Don't use Windows Thumbnails - it is a bit clumsy. Get Thumbs Plus from Cerious. Thumbs

actually thumbnails are not enabled at all. Its the sheer number of files I guess that is slowing the drive down. Its is a seperate drive than the main one used by the OS, but whenever I try to access it via windows explorer, it takes a good 10 minuites to simply 'scan' it (not sure if that is what its called, but that is what it seems like it is doing) and let winows explorer open it. IT also for a long time when the actual directories are opened up. Any way around this? Defrag analysissays everything is fine.... Is there way to database the files, and still have then usable for browsing, extraction for editing and printing?

In the folders toolbar, there is a setting for large Icons, Small Icons, List, Details, and Thumbnails... Try the List settings and see if that helps.

Also, there is a free prog called IRFANView or something like that, that's designed to help You view images... I think You can get it at www.downloads.com... You might try that.
