I have been trying to crimp rj45 cables for the last couple of days.. with no luck. I ahve gone through 6 or so connections, and have tried many different cables.

I have this crimper:
http://cgi.ebay.com/High-Quality-RJ45-R...6QQcategoryZ101282QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have also bought one from radioshack, and I cannot get either to work for me.

My issues with 'finished' cable are:
-router light blinks, pause 1 second, then all the lights for that port go out, pause 1sec.. then repeat
or
-the lights work fine.. but the computerisn't able to obtain an IP.

Then, I would go to a local mom and pop computer store.. they would crimp the same wire... and the cable would work fine :/

I am just doing a straight through cable.. but i make up my own color scheme.. Do I need to follow a certain 'standard'?

What is the answer to my woes :( ?

DON'T make up your own color scheme, it will confuse the tar out of anyone else who ever sees your cables. Make sure that you've got the wires in the EXACT same way on both ends. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD BUY A CABLE TESTER.

Not really, but it makes it easier on everyone if you do use a standard scheme.

I usually trim off 3/4" of insulation to give me plenty of room to organize wires, then clip the wires off to the correct length once they're in the right order and flat. Don't use the built in stripper obviously if you do this.

Make sure you're getting the wires all the way to the end of the connectors, also make sure you're crimping them correctly. On some cheap crimpers I've used if you push the connector all the way into the tool it misses the pins. Back it off a mm or two & they work.

If you're going to be making a lot of cables a good crimper helps a LOT.

i remember i purchased some cheap cable and I was making my own, they tested fine too with the tester, but crapped out when plugged into the wall. now that i got a box of useless cable. i had to use premade cables that is provided by the company and using a female-female connector.

theoretically, however, wouldn't using your own scheme be more succeptible to crosstalk and interference... since your pairs may not be twisted the same?

Anyway, I have the same crimper, I've got to squeeze down mega-hard on it, otherwise not all of the pins get pushed into the wires... High-quality my ass.

What he said. and obviopsuly make sure they are the same on both ends. THen get a cable tester and it will tell you which wire isn't making a good connection...

Main thing is make sur eyou leave enough of the wires exposed you can relaly shove it up in the connector so they go all the way to the very end.

Well there's your problem, as mentioned above, and it has to be the exact same on both ends. Either that or the wires aren't stripped enough and don't make good contact.

And as far as crimpers go... They're a bit pricey depending on where you get it, the Ideal Ratchet Telemaster (#30-696) is infalliable. It won't release until you've compressed it all the way, thus insuring that the damn thing actually gets crimped.

Aren't stripped enough? What school of crimping did you attend? You remove the jacket, you don't strip the damn wires.

get someone to show you how. (and for the love of god make sure you see a nice copper shine on the end, and the sheath clamp is actually clamping the sheath and not the wires, I've come accross some horrid cable crimps over the years)

emphasis.

you can't make up a color scheme. naturally, the colors are there for a reason. as everyone said, but i'll repeat again:

white/orange, orange, white/blue, green, white/green, blue, white/brown, brown

make sure you shove the wires all the way to the end of the rj45 terminator and then crimp.

piece of cake.

Yeah, I'm under the impression that if you *don't* use the standard coloring scheme, you're more likely to see data corrupted after a transfer because of cross-talk and how the wires are paired and twisted within the cable itself.

Can anyone professionally confirm?

The only 4 pins you need are 1, 2, 3 and 6. So as a test cable, only use 2 pairs of wires. This cable will work fine with 100Mbps connections. Only if you plan to use this cable for Gigabit would you need all 8 wires.

it is an art not a science. you just have to practice. and just like other "Art" , you may never get good at it

some people can sing/paint, etc and some can't

and always use "wire standard 568B" IMO

So get this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/IDEAL-RATCHET-TELEM...0QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

? Is this really the best? if so, I will go get it..

also, I do have a cable tester.. but it is a piece of CRAP.. because it said the cables were fine..

It does this test:
test cable 1, pause .4seconds test cable2, pause .4 seconds, etc

Here it is:

http://cgi.ebay.com/20-LED-Cable-Tester...47QQcategoryZ40985QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The one at the mom and pop shop detected the bad cable after they wiggled it some..

What is a good, inexpensive (welll..mainly good under $30 or so) tester?

thanks
Lee
