The new thunderbird seems to insist on only letting you make an account with a server it can connect to. Is there a way to bypass this crap and just setup with any values I want?

I need to do this so I can establish a profile, from there I can just replace that profile's content with a backup so I can get all my account settings back, rather than recreate them all manually.

That's what I ended up having to do. Create a temp account on the server then delete it. I don't remember the passwords for my existing ones and while I could change them, I rather not if I don't have to.

It's silly they don't allow creating a fake account though, it seems like a weird limitations. What if you want to configure mail for a server that happens to be down, or DNS has not propagated etc... it should at least let you put the entry anyway.

I agree. Creating a non-working account is probably a niche use, but it should be easy to accommodate. "There seems to be a problem with your settings, or the remote server. Continue?". Done. Then even weirdos like you get what they want without affecting anyone else :^D

Try filing a bug report. Maybe they'll agree.
