How to convert .mov to asf, avi, mpeg, etc

How do I do this? I tried this proggy called smartvid, but it said that it didn't support compressed audio and couldn't read the header file.

I know that Quicktime Pro does it, but I can't find a free trial of it😉 Is there anything else to try?

I don't have a specific answer...but if I'm not mistaken Quicktime 4 is based on MPEG-4. You might just be lucky to find a utility that changes the file header to be an AVI one that can be playable in media player with Microsoft's MPEG-4 codec. Then again...MS's implementation or Apple's could be so bastardized compared to the MPEG-4 standard that you might not find such a utility.

If there is a plugin for virtualdub to accept .mov's, this should be an easy task though. I don't have the virtualdub URL handy but just use any search engine (that's how I end up finding it when I need it...I'm not smart enough to use bookmarks yet😉)

There are a lot of smal programs like mpg2avi, avi2mov, etc. You can find soem of them and other progies and usefull links here.

Virtual Dub is likely your best bet. They have it at DivX Digest.

Go here and download a program to convert QT to avi or MPEG. You can use stream anywhere to conver MOV to Asf.

NFS, Terran Cleaner will do conversions of movies just about anyway you want to. Quicktime is one of the format's it supports...there are trials 🙂 out there...for more info go to www.terran.com

Another vote for VirtualDub.

Also, sometimes you need to handle the audio file portion of a conversion separately. For example, I have had .avi files I wanted to convert to MPEG, but ran in to cases where the video portion of the clip was in Divx, the audio in MPEG 3, this is very common, and most converter programs will not work. With VirtualDub I the load the clip and extract an uncompressed .wav file from the clip's audio portion, then open up Xing Encoder and compress the video portion of the clip together with the .wav file I created, resulting in an MPEG-1 clip. Works sweet.
