How to convert JPEG to Word Document?

So from time to time, I scan my receipts into JPEG. How does one convert them into a Word Document? I'm not talking about importing a JPEG into a Word Document. That is not what I'm looking for. I want it to be searchable and all. I know this will involve the use of OCR. What are the apps and steps that I can take to do this?

Look up OCR software.

If the receipts are hand written, OCR may not help much. You would end up making so many corrections that it would be faster to just enter the data manually.

If the receipts are computer generated/printed, OCR should be OK.

Another approach might be to read them and convert that to text using Dragon 13 or newer.

Try using Universal Document Converter. I use it for making PDF's but it can convert Word Documents to JPGs.

Did your scanner come with software? Most scanner software comes with OCR capabilities. It'll be rudimentary OCR, but that's probably all you'll need.

It's all computer generated and Dragon 13 is speech to text. Not sure how that is faster than OCR.

Yea, it's some Canon software. I want something good and accurate.

Commercial OCR packages make your task very easy, and can scan directly to Word files or PDFs. The actual steps involved are just scanning to an image, then inputting the image to OCR software.

I've never used it for receipts, which can have very small, not so legible type, but ABBYY Finereader is the leader of the OCR pack. At > $150, though, it's not cheap. There is a trial version available.

I've never used Nuance's Omniport (oops, make that OmniPage) myself, so I don't know how well it works. It has middling reviews on Amazon, but is, at the moment anyway, discounted all the way down to $29 on Amazon. Whether that indicates its quality level, or just it's lack of a foothold in the market, I don't know. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a trial version. [Edit] Apparently there is a trial for the professional version, which appears to use the same OCR engine.

I've played around some with open source OCR but frankly, it doesn't work nearly as well as Finereader, and is somewhat of a PITA to get up and running. I assume you already have a scanner. If not, and/or if you're in the market for a new one anyway, a "lite" version of ABBYY is sometimes bundled with them, so would be something to look out for.

Unfortunately I don't have a Windows Phone device, but it seems like Office Lens is exactly what I'm looking for. Fortunately what I intend to scan are all computer generated text. No handwriting so I expect OCR accuracy to be high with the best software.

Basically what I'm looking to do is what Office Lens is doing as described in the article linked above. I know that OCR software will allow me to copy and paste the text on to another program afterwards. Are there any OCR software that will also allow me to copy and paste any graphics or art to a Word Document? I'm amazed that Office Lens will also try to recreate the arts and graphics on to a Word Document. Of course one's mileage may vary.

You should be able to directly copy/paste the graphics image from the source (application) into a Word document.

You may have to manipulate the image for proper formatting
