how to connect two computers via usb?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that it is possible to do this with a male to male cable but I can't find how to in my searches. This is for for mental health reasons and any help would be appreciated. Both machines are running XP home.

Thanks, Ron

OK....its really for gaming 🙂

There are a couple of options:

Option 1: get USB-Ethernet adapters, and a cross-over cable. This has the advantage that you can just plug them into a switch/hub if you want more computers
Option 2: There is a thing that can connect 2 computers via USB, and use it for networking. Don't know of any names, but I have seen it around, it is possible.

The cheapest option though is to probably go out and buy a pair of $5 PCI Network cards and a bit of cross-over cable 🙂

Confused

I found what you were talking about.

The BAFO's Direct-LinQ, USB file transfer cable is a unique cable allowing you to easily connect two computers with USB ports and instantly transfer files at great speed. The Direct-LinQ USB cable is your fast solution for peer-to-peer file transfer between two computers via the USB port. The cable provides true plug-and-play capability while transferring files at much greater speed than traditional file transfer products via serial or parallel port, up to 6M bits/sec can be achieved

I had purchased a cable that was just male to male with no add-ons that made me think it was all I needed. Wonder what you use it for if you can't do it for direct connection?

Thanks for the help

Thanks for the help

No worries 🙂

Some peripherals might have the rectangular (A) connector rather than one of the smaller square ones (B), so the A-A cable would be for connecting to those peripherals.

I am using a 5m A-A cable, hooked up to a A-A connector, with my iPAQ sync cable, in my car. That's one reason why i've used one of those straight through cables 🙂

I would check the price also of USB-Ethernet connectors, and see if it will be worth it to get a couple of those instead, as you will have the advantage of being able to take the computers and hook them up to a switch/hub to connect other computers into 🙂 It's got much more versatility than a USB-USB connection cable 🙂

Confused

Both computers have nic's but I was just curious about doing it another way. From what I found XP only supports direct connect via serial, parallel, or infrared in the drop down box.

The USB connection device thingy will more than likely have it's own drivers/app to sort out the connectivity and communication.

I have a USB to Ethernet Network Kit made by ADS...it has it's own Drivers and not near as fast as the NIC way Confused
