How to connect DSL router to hub...

I have an Arescom NetDSL 800 DSL router that came with a self-install kit from Mindspring. My hub is a 3Com Homelink 8-port 10/100 hub. To share the DSL router to all the computers on the network, is it only necessary to plug it into one of the 8-ports? There is no uplink port on the hub. Do I need any special kind of network cable?

To get your network setup on the hub:

1)The uplink on the hub is usually the last one on the right(on most hubs anyway). You just need a normal cable for this.

OR

2) use 2 network cards.. one to recieve the the DSL and one network card to uplink to the hub.

OR

3)buy yourself a hub/router- linksys or the SMC Barricade are very good ones. The SMC runs around $65.00 and works great, it comes with a print server as well. The Linksys is more but it doesn't have a print server but will fill your needs.

 
Hmm... I just tried every port on the hub, and the "LINK" light on the DSL router would not come on no matter what port it was in (the "LINK" light is the little light that signifies whether or not the line is connected). At any rate, I was just using the same cable that Mindspring sent me to connect from the hub to my ethernet card. I don't know if it's a straight or a crossover cable. Should I be using a certain kind of cable?

I am not familiar with Arescom NetDSL 800 DSL Router, is this just DSL Modem, or it is also includes a Router?

Port on Hub is reversed to NIC ( this way we can use straight CAT5 cable). Uplink on a Hub is reversed to the regular port, i.e. is like NIC

If you don?t have an Uplink, and you DSL thing came with straight cable, you can connect it to regular Hub port, only use Crossover CAT5 cable.

If your DSL Modem is not a Router, and you need PPPOE for authentication, you can not use a Hub (hubs are not PPPOE compatible).
Under such circumstances, you have to buy a Cable/DSL Router that is PPPOE compatible.
 
Excellent! Got it to work by using a Crossover cable, although it was picky about the port. I think my hub is screwed up, anyways 🙂
