I'd like to have a Mp3 box so I decided to buy this 80 Gig from Maxtor and then I tried to install it on an old computer I had. Unfortunately the machine is very very old (pentium 90, 128 Mo RAM...) and the bios doesn't recognize the drive.
Is there any way to use my hardrive on this computer or am I stuck ?
(I'm not really confident in upgrading the bios as I already killed one just before...)

I also have a brand new laptop where I could attach the drive externally but I don't know what i need for that. Could you help ?

Thanx a lot for your answers,
Guiz

you could:

1. find the bios people and update it...
2. install one of those overlays that lets you recognize over 2 GB
3. stick it in a usb box and get a pci->usb controller, and hope for the best.

Would a seperate ATA 100 card work?

Also check the HD manufacturer website for an "overlay" that allows Windows to recognize the large HD.

Or else spend $500 on a new Do-It-Yourself system, you got the bucks it looks like ;)

That's what I'd recommend. Get a PCI Promise controller. About
$30 for an Ultra 66. It has it's own BIOS and is good for up to
128 gig HD's......
